Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association News Release - 25 March 2018 Champion of Champions On Sunday afternoon 13 bowlers competed in the Champion of Champions at Carnmoggas. Played on a straight knockout basis 10 players were involved in a preliminary round. Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) won 12-11 against David Balow (Marazion). Kevin Williams (Porthleven) won 18-2 against Henry Kendall (Withiel). Caroline Moore (Luxulyan) defeated Peter Skinner (Saltash) 13-3. Bob Banks (Boscastle) won 11-10 against John Menhenick (Wadebridge) and Neil Gribble (Landrake) won 10-8 against Wendy Carne (Penlee). In the Quarter Finals Williams defeated Tripp 16-6. Banks won 11-3 against Moore. Gribble defeated Mick Chandler (Liskeard) 8-5 and Peter Hore (Holmans) won 13-2 against Gerald Fisher (Redruth). In the Semi Finals Williams won 13-3 against Banks and Gribble defeated Hore 13-3. Williams won the final against Gribble 11-4. Bebbington Cup On Sunday the Bebbington Cup competition was contested by the four area league winners. The line was West - Newlyn Trinity Jowsters, Central - Withiel Oaks, East - Landrake and North - Blisland. In the first session Withiel Oaks and Landrake shared the points with results of 10-11 and 10-8. Newlyn Trinity Jowsters claimed a double victory over Blisland 13-8 and 20-7. Session Two saw Oaks and Blisland share the points 9-10 and 9-4. Jowsters and Landrake also shared points with results of 9-16 and 8-6. Session three saw Oaks and Jowsters share points 9-6 and 7-16 and Landrake and Blisland also sharing points 9-7 and 4-17. Jowsters claimed the title with 8 points +29 shots, Withiel 2nd with 6 -1, Landrake 3rd with 6 -17 and Blisland 4th with 4 -11. The league plate for Division One winners was contested by West - Centenary Spurrs, Central - St Newlyn East, East - Liskeard and North - Tintagel. The first session saw St Newlyn East and Liskeard share points with results of 7-11 and 7-6. Centenary Spurrs and Tintagel also shared points with results of 4-12 and 10-8. The second session saw St Newlyn East take maximum points against Tintagel with scores of 11-10 and 13-6. Liskeard and Spurrs shared the points with results of 14-2 and 3-18. The third session saw St Newlyn East again take maximum points with results of 11-8 and 12-5 against Spurrs. Liskeard also scored maximum points with wins of 10-3 and 11-4 against Tintagel. The final positions 1st St Newlyn East 10 points +15 shots, 2nd Liskeard 8 +14, 3rd Spurrs 4 -13 and 4th Tintagel 2 -16 National Championships On Saturday Elise Daniell, David Studden (Holmans), Karen Watson (Saltash) & Peter Hore (Holmans) will competed in the National Mixed Fours at Tamworth Indoor Bowls Centre. They came through the group stage unbeaten to set up a last 16 match against Devon's Eric Pavey, Malcolm Sheen, Kim Wright & Carol Osborne which they lost 5-11. The Devon rink went on to win the title. On Sunday Chris Roberts (Ladock) and John Worton (St Newlyn East) competed in the new Over 55's Pairs. They topped there group before losing 7-9 to Essex pairing Paul Reed & John Pye in the last 16. This coming weekend the action moves to Melton Mowbray Indoor Bowling Club. On Thursday 12th Karen Watson & Callum Beale (Withiel) will compete in the Singles. Friday 13th sees Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) & Gary Davey (Landrake), Elise Daniell & Luke Jolly (Withiel) and Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Mark Payne (Penlee) compete in the Pairs. On Saturday 14th Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), Luke Jolly & Callum Beale and Elise Daniell, David Studden, Karen Watson & Peter Hore compete in the Fours. The final day of the championships will see Kevin Williams (Porthleven), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Nigel Nicholls and Elise Daniell, Luke Jolly & Callum Beale compete in the Triples Short Mat Players Tour Over the weekend of 20th-22nd April Nigel Nicholls and Callum Beale travel to Belfast for the final SMPT tournaments of the year at the Belfast Indoor Bowling Club. On Friday afternoon Nigel pairs up with Stephen Proctor and Callum with Sean Trainor for the Two Bowl Pairs. For the weekends main event on Saturday and Sunday, the World Masters with an entry of 234 bowlers, Nigel starts the tournament leading the season's Order of Merit table with an advantage of 48.25 points over his nearest rival after winning the British Open in January and claiming third place in the English Masters in February. With a possible 150 points on offer in the tournament the 4 bowlers could still overhaul Nigel at the top of the table. In the world rankings, calculated over a rolling 12 events Nigel lies in 5th place and is the only bowler in the Top 10 not to have to drop points at this event. Nigel is drawn in Group 20 for the event Group 20 Stats Callum is drawn in Group 39 Group 39 Stats The SMPT organisers will be providing the usual full results service and social media broadcasting from the event over the two days.
