Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association News Release - 18 February 2018
Inter County Championship On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Daventry to face Essex in the quarter finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.
Cornwall started well winning three of the four games in the first session, Nigel Nicholls 12-11 in the Singles and Elise Daniell & David Studden 21-6 and Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse 14-8 in the Pairs. The second session saw points shared with Cornwall winning the Triples and Essex the Fours. Keith Williams, John Worton & Chris Roberts 11-10 and Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams 15-8. Cornwall led 10-6 at the halfway point in the match.
The third session saw points shared with Nicholls winning 11-9 in the Singles and Daniell & Studden winning 14-11 in the Pairs. Cornwall took the 2 bonus points for the Pairs and Essex took the Singles to move the match score onto Cornwall 16 Essex 12. The final session saw Essex fight back taking three games and bonus points from the Fours whilst Banks, Dyer & Williams won 13-7 in the Triples for Cornwall securing the bonus points levelling the match score at 20-20.
The tie break rules came into play with first the bonus points removed leaving the score 16-16 meaning a 3 mat 1 end play off was required to separate the two teams. Nigel Nicholls took an opportunity to run the jack into the ditch against Dom Reed to win his mat. David Studden out-bowled Jake Atrill to secure the match win for Cornwall. Peter Hore secured a 3-0 tie break win against Anthony Fautley.
Cornwall will face West Midlands in the Semi Finals at Daventry on Sunday 4 March.

Fours:- Graham Reeves (Saltash), Richard Kerr (Landrake), Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) & Luke Jolly (Withiel) 6-14 & 9-13 and Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake), Glynn Roy (Withiel), Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) & Callum Beale (Withiel) 6-10 & 8-15.
St Georges Cup This weekend Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore will line up in the South team for the annual North v South event at Bromsgrove Indoor Bowling Club. Known as the Ryder Cup of Short Mat Bowls Saturday will see Pairs and Fours played with Sunday starting with Fours followed by Singles.
