Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association News Release - 11 February 2018 Short Mat Players Tour English Masters Over the weekend seven bowlers from Cornwall made the long journey to the Falcon Bowling & Social Club, Chelmsford for the latest Short Mat Players Tour competition, the English Masters. Newlyn Trinity's Nigel Nicholls was again in good form following up last months British Open win with the bronze medal and extending his lead at the top of the Order of Merit rankings to 77.5 points. With a lead of 215.5 over the fourth placed English Bowler Nigel is now assured a place in the England team for the SMPT World Cup event in August. Nigel has moved up four places to fourth place in the World Rankings. Nigel came through the group stages second in Group 8 with three wins out of four, his only defeat to fellow Cornwall player Peter Hore. In the knockouts Nigel defeated Aaron Clare (ENG), Alex Kley (ENG), Frans Roberts (NED), Steve Killington (ENG) before defeat in the semi finals against eventual winner Jack Pye 9-10. In the bronze medal match Nigel defeated Stephen Gale (IoM) 11-4. Peter Hore (Holmans) topped group 8 with three wins out of four, an unbeaten run on Saturday ended by a 9-10 defeat on Sunday morning. In the last 32 Peter came up against Jonas Hager (SWE) losing 11-14. Callum Beale (Withiel) finished third in Group 3 with three wins and a draw that put him into the Plate competition. In the last 32 Callum defeated Ingvar Nelson (SWE) 17-5 before defeat in the last 16 to Nigel Charles (IRE) 8-12. Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) picked up two wins in Group 3 to finish fourth and take a place in the Plate competition where defeat in the last 64 to Eric Pavey (ENG) 3-16 ended his run. Glynn Roy (Withiel) won two games in Group 11 to finish fourth and also take a place in the Plate competition where defeat in the last 64 to Cennydd Howell (WAL) 5-11 ended his run. Elise Daniell (Holmans) won Sunday mornings final group game in Group 14 to finish fourth and take a place in the Plate competition where she was defeated in the last 64 by James Bucknell (ENG) 4-13. Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) won her final group game 12-0 to finish fifth and take a place in the Shield competition. In the Last 32 Dianne lost 8-10 to Bob Naylor (ENG). The next Players Tour events are two Pairs competitions in Cardiff over the weekend of 24 & 25 March which clash with the Cornwall County Championship FInals. The final Singles Tournament of the Season is over the weekend of 21 & 22 April in Belfast where as many as 270 bowlers will compete for the World Masters Title. Inter County Championship Cornwall's Premier Team start their run in the ESMBA Inter County Championship knockouts on Sunday at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club where they will face Essex in the Quarter Finals.
