| | CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION NEWS RELEASE 9 April 2017 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Cornwall were well represented at the English Short Mat Bowling Association National Championships over the past weekend at Melton Mowbray Indoor Bowling Club. On Thursday Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) and Karen Watson (Saltash) took part in the Singles. Nigel lost his first game to eventual winner Ryan Knight (Gloucestershire) 9-13. Wins against Aaran Clare (Northants) 13-7 and Ross Dunkley (West Midlands) 9-7 saw Nigel through to the knockout stages. In the second round Nigel defeated Ivan Lunn (Derbyshire) 11-5 and in the third round Josh Towey (West Midlands) was defeated 11-4. Nigel's run came to an end in the Quarter Finals where he was defeated by Bronagh Toleman (North Yorkshire) Karen started with a draw against Peter Roberts (Cheshire) 7-7 and followed up with a 16-5 win against Chris Grocott (Shropshire). Defeat in the third group game to Matt Dillon (Essesx) 10-14 left Karen third in group and out of the competition. On Friday the Pairs was contested with Peter Hore (Holmans) & Karen Watson and Tom Westlake (Treviscoe) & Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) competing. Peter & Karen lost their first game 6-10 to Chris & Richard Jeffery (West Sussex) 6-10. They responded with comprehensive 16-1 and 18-4 wins against Pauline Child & Eileen Smith Allen (Essex) and Paul Gough & Dave Redfern (Dorset) respectively to seal qualification for the knockout stages. In the second round they narrowly lost 6-7 to Tom Perris & Maggie Smith (Devon). Luke & Tom also lost their first game 7-11 to Richard Nicol & Derek Johns (Surrey). Wins of 8-7 against Barry Hedges & Peter Fautley (Essex) and 21-6 against Ross Martell & David Dowling (Derbyshire) saw them through to the second round where they also suffered defeat against Josh Hale & Ross Dunkley (West Midlands) 7-12. Saturday's Fours saw Elise Daniell (Holmans) and David Studden (Holmans) teaming up with Peter Hore & Karen Watson and Richard Brown, Sandra Worton, John Worton & Chris Roberts (All Ladock) representing Cornwall. Daniell, Studden, Hore & Watson failed to come through the group stages. A opening defeat 2-9 to Paul Bax, Josh Woods, Dave Woods & Keef Paxman (Essex) was followed by an 8-2 win against Simon Smith, Valerie Smith, May Precious & Mark Breame (Humberside). The final group game resulted in defeat to Robin Armstrong, Steve Jeffery, Anthony Bull & Jack Rollings (West Sussex) 4-7. The Ladock team topped a tight group with 4 points +6 shots. The first game resulted in defeat to Darren Stanford, Pauline Taylor, Brian McGiven & Jill Oakes (Hertfordshire) 5-7. Wins against Leah Thompson, Pete Hopkins, Paul Thompson & Jonathan Snith (Worcestershire) 13-10 and Carol Robbins, Eric Hasker, Neil Pratley & Chris Hasker (Oxfordshire) 9-4. In the second round they came up against Mike Tandy, Matt Smith, Chris Willies & Alan Jones (West Midlands) losing narrowly 7-8. The final day of the tournament on Sunday saw the Triples contested with Graham Reeves (Saltash) and Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) teaming up with Nigel Nicholls and David Studden, Peter Hore & Karen Watson taking part for Cornwall. Reeves, Cawrse & Nicholls lost their first game 4-8 to Josh Hale, Ross Dunkley & Peter Dunkley (West Midlands). Hopes were revived in their second game with a 14-7 win against Iris Brown, Thomas Brown & Denise Wiltshire (Wiltshire). A 10-10 draw in the final group game against Nigel Willard, John Turner & Mel Woods (Norfolk) dashed hopes of qualification for the knockouts. Studden, Hore & Watson came through the group stages unbeaten. 14-5 against Ian Roe, Ali Row & Ian Park (Herefordshire), 17-6 against Jason Woods, Jamie Forster & Simon Willies (Norfolk) and 8-3 against Sophie Wright, Sue Smith & Hazel Berry (Somerset). In the 2nd round they came up against Dave Redfern, Ben Riley & Robert Martin (Dorset) losing 4-10 to end Cornwall's representation at the Nationals for 2017. The season is very much winding down now with a break this weekend for the Easter Break. The following weekend (22/23 April) the England Squad Trials take place. Cornwall celebrates its bowlers successes on Sunday 30 April when the Presentation Lunch and Annual General Meeting are held at the Carnmarth Hotel, Newquay. The 6/7 May will see Holmans compete in the Torquay Leisure Hotels Top Club Competition against 15 other teams from across the country. | | | | | | |
