CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION NEWS RELEASE 12 March 2017 INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP On Sunday Cornwall's Short Mat bowlers made history competing in the final of the ESMBA Inter County Championship for the first time against three time former winners West Midlands at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club. The first session of Singles and Pairs was drawn with both counties winning a game apiece in each discipline. In Singles Nigel Nicholls won 18-6 and in the Pairs Karen Watson & David Studden won 16-6. Peter Hore lost his Singles 7-14 and John Worton & Chris Roberts lost 5-14 in the Pairs. The second session proved to be potentially decisive with West Midlands winning three of the four Triples and Fours games. For Cornwall Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams came back from 3-9 down to win 16-9 in the Triples. Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse lost 9-13 in the other Triple and in the Fours both went down by a two shot margin. Dennis Shorthouse, Richard Kerr, Nicholas Truscott & Neil Gribble 9-11 and Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp, Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly 10-12 losing on the last end of the game. At the halfway point in the match West Midlands led 10 points to 6. The third session saw Cornwall win both Singles, Nigel Nicholls 14-9 and Peter Hore 17-8 to comfortably take the bonus points. In the Pairs John Worton & Chris Roberts lost 10-12 in a last end decider and Karen Watson & David Studden were also defeated 6-16 giving West Midlands the bonus points. With the session points shared the progressive score moved onto Cornwall 12 points West Midlands 16 points. The final session saw three of the four games and the bonus points in both disciplines go down to the wire. In the Triples Kevin Williams completed a double on the day winning 11-5 but with Gill Cawrse losing 8-20 after dropping four on the last end the bonus points for the Triples went to West Midlands by a margin of three. In the fours Neil Gribble drew 9-9 and Luke Jolly suffered last end defeat going down 14-15 to give the West Midlands the bonus points by 5 shots. The final score Cornwall 15 points 179 shots West Midlands 25 points 179 shots. After the match the West Midlands captain Josh Hale gave credit to Cornwall for giving his team a hard fought match admitting that they had perhaps underestimated the Cornwall team. COUNTY FINALS Before Sunday's ICC final two County Titles were decided at Carnmoggas on Saturday. John Worton claimed the Two Wood Singles defeating Karen Watson in the final. Neil Gribble & Gill Cawrse won the Four Wood Pairs final against Martin Boraston & Gary Davey. INTER AREA MATCH This weekend see's the annual Inter Area Match contested on Sunday at Carnmoggas with teams of 32 representing each of the four league areas.
