| | CCSMBA NEWS RELEASE NEWS RELEASE 18 September 2016 INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP On Sunday Cornwall travelled to the Dorset Bowls Resort near Bere Regis to take on Dorset in the first round of matches the English Short Mat Bowling Association Inter County Championship. The Premier Team started with a shared first session with both Pairs winning by a single shot, John Worton & Karen Watson 13-12 and David Balow & David Studden 12-11. In the Singles Peter Hore lost by 14-15 and Nigel Nicholls 9-14. The second session also saw the points shared with both Triples winning. Ronnie Thomas, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse 16-9 and Mike Dyer, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams 12-11. In the Fours Dennis Shorthouse, Gary Davey, Richard Kerr & Neil Gribble lost 5-10 and Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp, Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly 6-14. The third session again saw points shared with wins for Hore, 13-11 in the Singles, and Balow & Studden 14-9 in the Pairs. Nicholls lost 8-14 in the Singles and Worton & Watson lost 8-14 in the Pairs. Cornwall took the bonus points in the Pairs and Dorset the Singles to leave the match tied at 14-14 going into a deciding session that would see Cornwall fail to score a point. In the Triples Cawrse lost 6-21 and Williams lost 9-12, in the Fours Gribble lost 6-10 and Jolly lost 10-12. The final match score Dorset 26 points 200 shots Cornwall 14 points 166 shots. The A Team took an advantage in the first session with wins for Chris Roberts 13-9 & Alan Holden 17-12 in the Singles and Betty Temple-Smith & Bob Banks 13-12 in the Pairs. The other Pair of Keith Williams & Ray Jeffery lost 10-16. Dorset clawed back in the second session restricting Cornwall to 3 points closing the gap to 2 points. A win in the Fours for Lynne Davey, Henry Kendall, Mike Webster & Keith Matthews 12-6 and a draw in the Triples for Graham Reeves, John Dodd & Brenda Sleep 11-11. The second Triple of Sheila Hodge, Graham Ford & Derek Newton lost 11-17 and the second Four of Meg Horrell, Tony Jago, Sandra Worton & Ken Horrell lost 4-12. In the third session dominant wins in the Singles for Roberts 17-6 and Holden 16-7 saw Cornwall take a clean sweep of points in the discipline. Temple-Smith and Banks won 20-8 in the Pairs securing the bonus points to take Cornwall within two points of winning the match. Williams & Jeffery kept the margin of defect to 1 in there game, losing 10-11. Cornwall finished the match dropping only two of the twelve on offer in the final session. In the Triples Newton won 14-8 and Sleep drew 13-13 to leave the bonus points shared. In the Fours Horrell won 13-3 and Matthews 17-5. The final match score Dorset 11 points 156 shots Cornwall 29 points 211 shots. Cornwall have a quick return to action on Sunday when Devon are the visitors to Carnmoggas. MIXED FOURS On Saturday 12 teams will contest the County Mixed Fours title at Carnmoggas with play getting underway at 0900. INTER COUNTY RINKS Cornwall recently competed in the Inter County Rinks at the Dorset venue. With two teams from three qualifying for the finals later in the season. Cornwall narrowly missed on qualification losing 45-51 to Devon and 43-45 to Somerset. | | | | | | |
