COUNTY FOUR WOOD PAIRS

The Christmas break came to an end for Cornwall's Short Mat Bowlers at the weekend with two days of qualification competitions for the County Four Wood Pairs.  

25 teams competed on Saturday with pairs split into six groups with the group winners and two best runners up moving to a single knockout round.  Top scorers in the group stages were Sandra & John Worton with 6 points +31 shots in Group Six.  Next up were Adam Hall & Ed Dyer with 6 +30 in Group Two.  Third highest scorers were Joe Dixon & Ted Pentland with 6 +20 in Group Four and the only other unbeaten team in the group stages were Betty Temple-Smith & Keith Matthews with 6 +14 in Group Five.  Competing the group winners were Richard Brown & Graham Luke with 4 +14 in Group One and Des Pengelly & Alan Holden with 4 +12 in Group Three.  The two highest runners up were Gordon & Jenny Smith with 4 +25 in Group Four and Luke Jolly & Karen Watson with 4 +12 in Group Five who qualified ahead of Jean Welch and John James who also had the same score by virtue of more shots scored.

The knockout round saw the two runners up take full advantage with Luke Jolly & Karen Watson winning a rematch against Betty Temple-Smith & Keith Matthews 12-4.  Gordon & Jenny Smith defeated Adam Hall & Ed Dyer 13-10.  In the other games Sandra & John Worton won 8-7 against Des Pengelly & Alan Holden and Richard Brown & Graham Luke were 8-6 winners against Joe Dixon & Ted Pentland.

Sunday's competition took the same format with 24 pairs drawn into six groups.  Three teams won all three games with Graham Reeves and Jim Ashton top scorers with 6 +23 in Group Two.  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore finished with 6 +21 in Group Six and Dennis Shorthouse & Richard Kerr ended the group stages with 6 +20 in Group Four.  Two pairings were unbeaten with two wins and a draw, Diane & Martin Williams with 5 +13 in Group One and Lynne & Gary Davey with 5 +10 in Group Three.  The final group winners were Neil Gribble & Gillian Cawrse with 4 +33 in Group Five.  The two best runners up were Roy Sumner & David Balow with 4 +15 in Group Six and Carol & Graham Ford with 4 +12 in Group One.

Like Saturday the runners up again took advantage with Carol & Graham Ford defeating Dennis Shorthouse & Richard Kerr 17-5 and Roy Sumner & David Balow winning 12-9 against Lynne & Gary Davey.  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore won 13-3 against Diane & Martin Williams and in the final game Neil Gribble & Gillian Cawse were 12-5 winners against Graham Reeves & Jim Ashton.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall's Premier Team have been drawn to play Essex in the Quarter Finals of the Main Championship on Sunday 22nd February in Bristol.  Victory in the match could set up a semi final against eight time in a row championship winners Cheshire.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR

Three local bowlers travel to Stomstad in Sweden this weekend to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Swedish Masters which features an entry of 96 bowlers from across Europe including England, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Belgium and Isle of Man.  Peter Hore and Nigel Nicholls have been drawn in the same group alongside Northern Ireland's Uel Finlay, Sweden's Fredrik Larrson & Magnus Nordin and Belgium's Louis Helsen.  Results for the group will be available online throughout the weekend by visiting http://tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draw.aspx?id=01D095E4-F9A8-47EF-84D1-EB476E61189D&draw=20.  Elise Daniell will face Northern Ireland's Mark Beattie (last years runner up) & Sam Moore, England's Steve Puttock & Karl Hudson and Sweden's Ulf Hällstrand in the group stages.  Group results can be found http://tournamentsoftware.com/sport/draw.aspx?id=01D095E4-F9A8-47EF-84D1-EB476E61189D&draw=32.
