CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE – 2 December 2012
INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall faced Somerset at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls Club in the final round of Round Robin games of this year’s ESMBA Inter County Championship competition. Going into the match Cornwall were confident of pulling off results that would see both the Premier and A teams record their respective best finishes in the groups stages for some years however Somerset proved tough opponents as they set about destroying Cornwall’s ambitions.
The Premier Team recorded just one point in the first session, the morning Singles and Pairs, with Nigel Nicholls earning a 15-15 draw in the Singles. The second session, the morning Triples and Fours, was to prove almost as frustrating for Cornwall as they recorded just two points courtesy of Bill Sharp, Neil Gribble & Chris Roberts in the Triples 10-8. After a hugely disappointing morning Cornwall trailed by 3 points to 13 and 68 shots to 96.
Cornwall’s fortunes changed a little in the third session as they managed to earn a share of the game points. Nigel Nicholls completing a double in the Singles with a 14-9 win and Graham Reeves & Nicholas Truscott winning 15-7 in the Pairs. Somerset claimed the bonus points from both disciplines to take the match win with a session to spare. The final session saw a dominant Somerset win three of the four games. Elise Daniell, Derek Elliott, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher scoring 2 points from the session for Cornwall with a win in the fours 11-6. Somerset claimed the respective Triples and Fours bonus points to wrap up a dominant 31 points to 9 and 188 shots to 153 match win to move from fourth place in the table before the start of the weekend into second place. With Dorset scoring 12 points against Devon on Saturday they secured third place with Cornwall left at the bottom of the table and likely to face a preliminary round match in what will now be a defence of the Inter County Championship Consolation title in the knockout stages.

Cornwall’s A Team started the match two points behind their opponents and confident that having only narrowly been defeated at Taunton earlier in the season, the team would be able to pull off a result that would see them top the table. Somerset however had other ideas as they took a clean sweep of games in the first session of Singles and Pairs. Cornwall fought back in the second session with three wins to bring the score back to 6-10. In the Triples wins for Lynne Davey, Gary Davey & Keith Matthews 9-5 and Tony Jago, Joe Dixon & Henry Kendall 9-8 together with a win in the Fours for Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Terry Bray and Peter Hamley 11-9 saw Cornwall on the scoreboard.
The afternoon Singles and Pairs saw Cornwall record a solitary win, Luke Jolly in the Singles winning 15-11. Somerset claimed the bonus points which pushed them onto 20 points ensuring top spot in the table. The final session saw points split 3-5 in Somerset’s favour. For Cornwall the points came from the Fours with Peter Hamley’s rink recording a dominant 17-1 win and Meg Horrell, Pam Williams, Dennis Shorthouse & Derek Newton drawing 8-8. Cornwall took the Fours bonus points and Somerset the Triples to leave the final match score Cornwall 13 points 164 shots Somerset 27 points 174 shots. Cornwall will play in the Main Championship section of the Knockout competition, the natural progression from winning the Consolation Title last year, after finishing in second place in the table.
