CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE – 11 December 2011

 

COUNTY TRIPLES

 

On Saturday 33 teams competed in the qualification competition for the County Triples championship at Fowey Community Leisure Centre.

 

16 teams competed in the morning session split into four groups.  Group One qualifiers were Melba Kitt, Graham Reeves and Darren Woolner (Saltash) with 4 points +5 shots.  Emma Provis, Sheila Flower and Robert Flower (Tintagel) were unbeaten to claim Group Two with 5 +9. Three wins for Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott and Peter Hore (Holmans) saw them take Group Three with 6 +24, the best score of the morning session.  The final group winners from the session were Gillian Cawrse (Withiel), Pam Hamley and Peter Hamley (Lostwithiel) with 5 +23.  The four teams progress direct to the last 8 on Finals day in March.

 

The afternoon session saw 17 teams split into 5 groups of either 3 or 4.  The 5 group winners being joined by the three best 2nd place teams in an extra playoff round.  Group One saw two St Newlyn East teams qualify.  Jim Stanley, Pam Williams and Caroline Stanley with 4 +13 as group winners and Betty Bawden, Carol Ford and Graham Ford with 4 +6 as runners up.  In Group Two Kath Goodman, Tony Jago and Brian Webb claimed the group win with 4 +25, the best score of the afternoon, also claiming a spot in the playoff round were Lesley Clayton, Christine Kent and Tony Knight who claimed the runners up spot with 4 -17.

 

Cathy Webb (Treviscoe), Marilyn Stewart and Henry Kendall (Withiel) took Group Three with 4 +9.  Alan Holden, Dennis Shorthouse and Neil Gribble (Landrake) claimed Group Four with 4 +4.  Lynn Davey, Martin Boraston and Gary Davey (Liskeard) were the final group winners with 4 +16 in Group Five.  The final spot in the knock out round went to Julie Bennett, Frank Bennett and Esme Stokes (Wadebridge) who were the best of the runners up in the groups of three with 2 +3 in group 4.  Unfortunately due to time constraints the playoff’s could not be contested and will have to be played at a later date.

 

NATIONAL PAIRS AND TRIPLES

 

On Sunday attention turned to the National Championships with the Pairs and Triples played at Ladock Village Hall.

 

The Pairs were played first with the teams split into two groups with the top two from each going forward to a semi final round. Qualifying from Group One were Karen Watson (Treviscoe) & Neil Gribble (Landrake) with 6 +13 and Peter Skinner (Saltash) & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) with 4 +5. Group Two qualifiers were Richard Brown & David Studden (Illogan) with 4 +4 and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore (Holmans) with 1 -1.

 

In the semi finals Karen and Neil came from 2-8 down to force extra end against Nigel and Peter.  The extra end was tied forcing a very unusual 2nd extra end which went the way of Nigel and Peter with a final score of 10-8.  Richard and David led throughout their semi against Peter and Dennis eventually winning 10-8.  In the final Richard and David were again not led at any point as they defeated Nigel and Peter 10-5 to claim a place at the National Championships.

 

The Triples, played in the afternoon, was keenly contested throughout with the result determined by the last game between Nicholas Truscott (Holmans), Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Peter Hore (Holmans) and Richard Brown (Illogan), Derek Elliot (Holmans) & David Studden (Illogan).  In a close match it was the Triple skipped by David Studden that prevailed 8-6 to claim the Nationals place.
