INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday (6 November) Cornwall hosted Dorset in the final home fixture of the 2011-12 ESMBA Inter County Championship season at Fowey Community Leisure Centre.
The Premier Team, without a win so far this season, started tentatively in the first session of Singles and Pairs with both counties recording two wins apiece. Cornwall’s points recorded by Peter Hore (20-6) in the Singles and Richard Brown & David Studden (21-9) in the Pairs. The second session saw Cornwall claim three wins and a draw. In the Triples Graham Ford, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley (12-10) and Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (13-9). The Fours were closely contested with Elise Daniell, Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (7-7) and Graham Luke, Joe Dixon, Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (8-7). At the lunch break Cornwall led 11 points to 5 and 102 shots to 80.
The afternoon Singles and Pairs saw Cornwall record a further three wins. Peter Hore (14-9) in the Singles, Richard Brown & David Studden (10-8) and Nicholas Truscott & Karen Watson (13-6) in the Pairs. With the points bonus points secured in both disciplines Cornwall had the match result in the bag with a session to play, 21 points to 7. Cornwall completed a much needed and moral boosting win in the final session of Triples and Fours with a further 7 points. In the Triples Graham Ford, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley (15-8) and Roy Christophers, Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp 8-8. In the Fours Elise Daniell, Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (8-3) and Graham Luke, Joe Dixon, Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (11-6). Cornwall secured both bonus points also from the final session to leave the final score at Cornwall 32 points 193 shots Dorset 8 points 143 shots.

Cornwall’s A Team went into their fixture with a marginally better record to date than the opponents. Dorset however started stronger winning three games in the morning Singles and Pairs, Cornwall’s only points recorded by Robert Flower (15-10) in the Singles. Cornwall hit back with a 5-3 session advantage on the second session with wins for Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall & Mike Widger (18-6) in the Triples and Meg Horrell, Derek Swaby, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton (7-3) in the Fours. A draw for Sheila Flower, Tony Jago & Luke Jolly (8-8) in the Triples secured the session advantage. At the halfway point Cornwall trailed 7 points to 9 and 92 shots to 89.
Cornwall claimed both of the afternoon Pairs with wins for Marion & John Keers (16-7) and Keith Williams & Betty Temple-Smith (12-7), however both Singles were defeated. With Cornwall claiming the Pairs bonus points and Dorset taking the Singles Cornwall trailed by 2 points into the last session where Dorset claimed three games to secure the overall match victory. Cornwall’s points scored in the session by the Triple of Sheila Flower, Tony Jago & Luke Jolly (17-8) which also secured the bonus points to leave the final match score at Cornwall 17 points 164 shots Dorset 23 points 185 shots.

Cornwall face a quick return to action with a trip to the Devonshire Health and Racquets Club in Plymouth on Saturday (12 November) to take on leaders Devon.
COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
On Saturday (5 November) 36 bowlers, split into two sessions, competed in the County Two Wood Singles qualification competition at Fowey Community Leisure Centre. The morning session saw Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) unbeaten in winning Group 1 with 6 points +21 shots. Martin Boraston (Liskeard) finished with an unbeaten 6 +11 to win Group 2. Sue Ashton (Saltash) claimed Group 3 with 4 +1, a drawn game between Holmans club mates Elise Daniell and Nicholas Truscott costing both a chance of qualification. The final qualifier from the morning was Ken Horrell from Group 4 with an unbeaten 6 +14.
The afternoon saw Joe Dixon (Withiel) claim Group 1 unbeaten with 6 +25. Robert Flower (Tintagel) defeated Peter Hore (Holmans) 12-7 in the Group 2 decider to progress with 6 +17. A tight Group 3, with three bowlers finishing on 4 points, saw Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) progress with 4 +25 ahead of Graham Reeves (Saltash) 4 +15 and Brian Webb (Treviscoe) 4 -1. John Keers (St Newlyn East) progressed from Group 4 with 6 +16.
The 8 qualifiers will return to Fowey on Saturday 10 March for the finals.
