CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAY BOWLS ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE – 30 OCTOBER 2011
COUNTY PAIRS
43 pairs contested the County Pairs championship qualification competition over the weekend with 4 teams from each day qualifying for the finals on Sunday 18 March 2012. On both days teams were split into groups for a round robin competition with group winners and the best runners up playing a single knockout round to determine the qualifiers.
On Saturday, Group 1 saw Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) draw their final game against with Graham Luke & Brian Wakeley (Ladock) leaving both teams tied on 5 points at the top of the group. Patsy & Chris progressed to the knockout stage as group winners with 5 pts +10 whilst Graham & Brian claimed a runners up spot with 5 +9. Group 2 saw three of the four teams finish on four points with Eric & Joan Boddy (Withiel) coming out on top with 4 +6. Two Illogan teams were tied on 4 +4 with Linda Martin & Gerry Fisher gaining a runners up spot by virtue of their 14-7 win over Joe Coups & David Studden, as head to head results are used to determine tie breaks.
David Griffin & Bill Sharp (Dobwalls) were untroubled in recording 6 +29 to take group 3 and similarly Meg & Ken Horrell (Withiel) recorded an unbeaten 6 +25 to progress from Group 4. In Group 5 a 7-6 win for Sheila & Robert Flower (Tintagel) over Jim & Carolyn Stanley (St Newlyn East) saw them unbeaten with 6 +26. Jim & Carolyn claimed the final runners up spot with 4 +5.
In the knockout round Dave Griffin & Bill Sharp defeated Meg & Ken Horrell 12-6. Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts claimed a narrow 11-10 victory over Linda Martin & Gerry Fisher. Eric & Joan Boddy were 12-7 winners against Jim & Carolyn Stanley and the final spot was claimed by Graham Luke & Brian Wakeley who defeated Robert & Sheila Flower 9-6.
Sunday’s play saw Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) in dominant form to take Group 1 with 6 +35, Richard Brown & Bob Williams (Illogan) claimed a runners up spot with 4 +6. Group 2 saw Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (Dobwalls) unbeaten to finish on 6 +19 and Betty Temple-Smith & Phil Hicks (Luxulyan) progress in a runners up spot with 4 +14. Group 3 went the way of Kath Goodman & Karen Watson (Treviscoe) with an unbeaten 6 +11. Jim Rule & Terry Bray (Lostwithiel) took Group 4 with another unbeaten score of 6 +24. Completing a full house of unbeaten group winners on the day were Michael Webster & Keith Matthews (Blisland) with 6 +17 in Group 5. Joining them in the knockout round were Posy & Michael Widger with 4 +10.
The knockout round saw Margaret Jenkins & Nigel Nicholls defeat Posy & Michael Widger 11-4. Brenda Sleep & Max Burden were 12-6 winners against Kath Goodman & Karen Watson. Richard Brown & Bob Williams claimed a 13-3 win over Keith Matthews & Michael Webster. In the only game to go to the full 11 ends Jim Rule and Terry Bray defeated Betty Temple-Smith & Phil Hicks 9-7.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Sunday Dorset are the latest visitors to Fowey Community Leisure Centre in the ESMBA Inter County Championship. Cornwall lie in third place in the South West Group in both the Premier Team and A team competitions with 2 and 7 point advantages over Dorset respectively. Team manager Chris Cawrse was facing some selection headaches and the final team is not known at the time of writing.
COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
Prior to the Inter County Match, on Saturday 38 bowlers are entered in the County Two Wood Singles qualification competition to be played at Fowey Community Leisure Centre. Play is split into two sessions with the morning starting at 0900 and afternoon at 12.45.

News Release – 9 October 2011
INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Cornwall face the first away match of the 2011-2 season on Sunday (16 October) when they travel to Taunton to face Somerset at Taunton Deane Indoor Bowls Club. The Premier team started the season with an 18-22 defeat at home to Devon whilst Somerset drew away to Dorset in the first round of games three weeks ago. The A team were comprehensively at home by Devon who recorded a 26-14 win whilst Somerset took a 21-19 win away to Dorset. The Cornwall team management are forced into a number of team changes for the trip due to player unavailability and the final teams have not been announced at the time of writing.
INTER AREA LEAGUE
The West area start the defence of the Inter Area League title on Saturday when they take on East at Fowey Leisure Centre. Also on the same day North will face Central at the same venue. The matches are contested to the same format as the Inter County Championship with each area represented by 2 singles players, 2 pairs, 2 triples and 2 fours.

Summer League Final
Wanderers (Dobwalls) have claimed the CCSMBA Summer League title defeating Withiel Oaks over two legs. The first leg played at Withiel, on Wednesday 28 September saw the Oaks win a close game by 17 shots to 15. The following evening at Dobwalls produced another close game with the Wanderers (Dobwalls) team of Bill Sharp, Dave Griffin, Brenda Sleep and Max Burden winning by 17 shots to 11 to claim the title by 32 shots to 28. The Withiel team over the two legs included Meg Horrell, Eric Boddy, Joan Boddy, Tony Liddicoat and Ken Horrell.
England Ladies Match
Over the weekend of 1st & 2nd October Holman’s bowler Elise Daniell took part in the England Ladies match against a team of bowlers from Armagh, Ireland.
On Saturday the teams competed at Bridgeman Bowling Club in Harrold, Bedfordshire. In the first game of the day saw Elise in a triples with Debbie Phillips (Norfolk) and Brenda Jones (West Sussex). After a slow start to trail 3-5 at the half way point, successive scores of 5 and 3 saw them take the lead and go on and win 12-8. The second game same the trio joined by Celia Jeans (Somerset) to play as a four. Up against an Armagh four skipped by the highly rated Indoor and Outdoor international Catherine McMillen they were never led to claim a 12-10 victory. The third game of the day saw Elise and Celia joined by Jean Woods (Norfolk) and Jeanette Gayler (Herts), recovering from a 2-6 deficit at the halfway point by picking up a 6 on the sixth end and going on to win 12-9. England led by 4 points overnight.
On Sunday the match moved to the Kempston Indoor Bowling Club in Bedford. In the first game of the day Elise, Debbie, Brenda & Celia lost 4-14. The second game saw Elise and Celia joined by Jean and Jeanette. The four raced to an 11-1 lead at the half way point against Catherine McMillen going on to win 13-5.
The final match score read England Ladies 63 points, 667 shots - Armagh (Ireland) Ladies 49 points, 662 shots
Masters Singles
Newlyn Trinty’s Nigel Nicholls took on the challenge of the inaugural Masters Singles competition at Wye Valley Bowls Club in Surrey over the weekend. The competition was played to a first to 21 shots format rather than a fixed number of ends or time.
In the group stages Nigel started well with a 21-15 win against Robert Kidd (Ireland) before a heavy defeat at the hands of Chris Mann (Norfolk) 6-21 in the second game left Nigel needing victory from the final group game to ensure progression to the last 32. Nigel duly earned the victory to progress through to the knockout stages with a 21-14 win over Ben Haulkham (West Sussex).
Derek Johns (Surrey) provided the opposition in the last 32 with Nigel winning 21-15. A much closer game followed in the last 16 with Nigel edging past Gavin Wood (East Sussex) 21-19 to move through to the Quarter Finals. Nigel progressed to the Semi Finals with a 21-14 win over Demitri Payne (Belguim) in the quarter finals. Chris Blackman (West Sussex) provided the semi final opposition but proved to be game too far for Nigel as he went down to a fighting 18-21 defeat.
