Charity Competition at St Minver

On Saturday 6th August 2011 a charity Short Mat Bowls Competition was hosted by St. Minver SMBC in memory of Tony Watson who passed away August last year.

The event was held to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support who helped Tony through the last few months of his life. There was a great turn out of teams, with some bowlers travelling from as far at St. Agnes to take part.

Teams played in a round robin competition with four teams progressing to the semi finals. Home team St Minver lead the qualifiers with 6 points and 26 shots closely followed by Landrake with 6 points and 21 shots. Joining them were Camelford with 5 points and 16 shots and Withiel with 4 points and 8 shots.

The first semi was keenly contested with the final result decided by the last bowl delivered by Withiel’s Ken Horrell to clinch the win over Camelford and a place in the final. Landrake claimed the second semi by 5 shots from St. Minver.

The final was a much closer contest than the final score shows with Landrake, skipped by Neil Gribble, winning by 12 shots to Withiel’s 4.

The day was a great success which again demonstrated the ability of Cornwall’s short mat bowlers to support such a worthy cause with a final total of £600 raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Watson family would like to thank everyone for their participation and making the day such a success and also Ring O’Bells (St. Columb), Sharps Brewery, Julian Foye, WTW Cinemas, Crealy, Sainsburys, Tesco, and Macmullan Solicitors for their kind donations.
