ESMBA Inter County Championship

Cornwall’s A Team have qualified for the final of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation competition after a narrow 21 points to 19 semi final victory over Oxfordshire at Merchants Academy Sports Centre in Bristol on Saturday.

A close first session saw Cornwall and Oxfordshire share the eight points on offer with a win apiece in the both the Singles and Pairs.  Terry Bray ( 13-11) in the Singles and Miriam Barbery & Brenda Sleep (17-7) in the Pairs recording Cornwall’s points.  The second session saw Cornwall move into the lead of the match with three wins recorded by  Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (13-6) in the Triples, Kath Goodman, Ashley Davies, Joyce Ward & Derek Swaby (17-4) and Meg Horrell, Joe Dixon, Max Burden & Derek Newton (12-0) in the Fours.  At the lunch break Cornwall lead 10 points to 6 and 95 shots to 80.

The third session proved critical to the outcome of the match as Cornwall went unbeaten in the afternoon singles and pairs with wins for Graham Reeves (19-5) in the Singles, Miriam Barbery & Brenda Sleep (20-8) and Tony Jago & Luke Jolly (14-11) in the Pairs.  Cornwall collected the bonus points for the Pairs with a 20 shot advantage with Oxfordshire claiming the Singles by 2 shots.  Terry Bray’s draw (12-12) in the Singles left Cornwall needing a single point from the final session to secure the match win.  With a session to play the score read Cornwall 19 points 156 shots Oxfordshire 9 points 120 shots.

Cornwall failed to claim a game in the final session of Triples and Fours to allow Oxfordshire to close the score deficit.  Cornwall’s match winning hopes saved by the strong scoring of the Fours in the morning which saw Cornwall claim the shots bonus points to move onto an unassailable 21 points for the match.  Oxfordshire claimed the Triples bonus points to leave the final score Cornwall 21 points 185 shots Oxfordshire 19 points 164 shots.

Cornwall’s opponents in Sunday’s final, to be played at Caroline Chisholm School, Northampton will be Hampshire who defeated Shropshire 22-18 in the other semi final.  On the two previous occasions in the past 5 years that Cornwall have reached the final they have gone on to win the title in 2007 and 2009.
