CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE – 12 April 2010

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Three local bowlers travelled to Bedford last weekend to compete in the English Short Mat Bowls Association National Championships.

On Thursday (8 April) Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) competed in the Singles easily qualifying for the knockout stages, claiming three wins out of three in Group 15.  15-7 v Gary Allard (Kent), 14-6 v Les Baldry (Wiltshire) and 11-7 v Mark White (Dorset).  In round two Nigel claimed a comfortable 16-5 win against Phil Welland (Warwickshire) to move into the last 16.  In round three, the last 16, Andrew Beard (East Sussex) provided the opposition with Andrew claiming the match 11-10 after the 11 ends.

Friday (9 April) saw Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) in action in the Pairs.  The pairing lost out 7-9 in a tight opening group game against Dave Wall & Herbie Bowden (Shropshire).  A 4-9 defeat to Stella & Glyn Jones (Hampshire) in the second game ended their chances in the competition for this year.  The final game against Phil Giles & Ken Lever (Dorset) ended 9-9 to ensure a point apiece for both counties.

Due to a lack of entries at a local level Cornwall was not represented in the Fours on Saturday (10 April).

Sunday (11 April) saw all three combine to compete in the Triples.  The opening group game against T Osgood, T Alexander & R Edwards (Surrey) ended in a 6-6 draw.  The second game saw the Cornwall Trio pickup a 9-4 win against C Hurst, J Hurst & S Brown (Suffolk).  The final group game against 2009 Runners Up D Hayward, T Millership & J Pitcher (Warwickshire) ended in defeat 11-3.  Fortune favoured the Cornwall as the Suffolk trio defeated Surrey to leave the final group scores reading Warwickshire 6 points +21 shots, Cornwall 3 -3, Suffolk 2 -9, Surrey 1 -9.

Opposition for Cornwall in the second round came from the North Yorkshire trio of Roger Green, Gareth Townend & Rose Haynes, who coincidentally put Cornwall out at the same stage of the competition last year.  This year however it was Cornwall who dominated the game throughout claiming a 12-2 win with an end to spare.  Moving into the third round Cornwall faced G Davies, L Woodward & M Davies (Oxfordshire) who opened up an 8-0 lead early on to put Cornwall under pressure.  Cornwall fought back to overturn the deficit to win the game 10-9 and with it a place in the quarter finals.

Quarter Final opponents were J Neal, M Walker & G Stoller from Cheshire.  A tight game ended with Cheshire taking 2 shots on the final end to claim the game 8-7 and thus ending Cornwall’s run at the championships for 2010.

INTER AREA LEAGUE

The Cornwall Inter Area League concludes on Sunday at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin with Central meeting West and North meeting East.  Central currently lead the table with 42 points, West have 41, East 40 and North 21.
