NEWS RELEASE 3rd February 2008

Inter County Success

Cornwall’s A team travelled to Melksham on Sunday to face Oxfordshire in the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.

The first session saw Cornwall claim three wins from the four games with both Singles, Peter Spargo & Graham Reeves and the Rink of Pam Williams, Tony Jago, Lin Stephens & Brian Wakeley all scoring strongly to open up a 4 point and 22 shot lead. Cornwall were equally dominant in the second session again claiming three wins courtesy of Joyce Ward & Bill Sharp in the Pairs and the Triples of Sheila Hodge, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton and Kath Goodman, Joe Coup & Francis Walther. At the halfway point Cornwall lead 12 points to 4 and 107 shots to 69.

The third session saw the points shared, a dominant 26-3 win for Peter Spargo increased the shot difference to over 50 effectively sealing the result in Cornwall’s favour with Oxford needing to win all four games and overturn the shots difference in the final session to win. In the final session Sheila & Robert Flower were first to finish with a 19-9 win to confirm Cornwall’s victory. Joyce Ward & Bill Sharp and Kath Goodman, Joe Coup & Francis Walther also claimed victories. In the final game to finish the triple of Sheila Hodge, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton held five with the Oxfordshire skip having the last wood. An excellent weighted wood saw the jack leave the mat and in the subsequent replayed end Oxford claimed 2 shots to win the game.

Cornwall claimed the match by 26 points to 10 and 217 shots to 142. Kent will be the opponents in the semi finals due to be played in Northampton on Sunday 2nd March.
