ESMBA/TLH TOP CLUB

Over the weekend two teams travelled to Torquay to compete in the Torquay Leisure Hotels Top Club competition which involved teams of six players playing singles, pairs, triples and fours with each match decided on points with two points for a win and one for a draw and an additional point for aggregate shots.

Peter Hore, Elise Daneill, Marc Eddy, Neil Gibble, Gillian Cawrse & Nigel Nicholls were defending the title and in the group stages started with a 7-2 win against West Midlands team E57 Rollers.  A 2-7 defeat against Gloucester Knights left the defending champions with work to do in the final group game against Middlezoy.  The game was won 7-2 to secure second place in the group.

In the Quarter Finals East Hanningfield from Essex were defeated 7-2 to progress to a semi final against Bob Carter Centre from Norfolk.  Holmans won 5-4 to set up a final against Smallthorne Pioneer from Staffordshire.  The final was lost 2-7 with only the Triples winning.

The second Cornwall team, started with a heavy loss to eventual winners Smallthorne Pioneer 2-7.  A 3-6 loss to Dorset's Hazelbury Brian followed leaving them on 5 points from 2 games.  The final group game against Bob Carter again resulted in a defeat 4-5.

In the Quarter Finals of the Plate competition Cheshire's Burtonwood provided the opposition and were defeated 7-2.  The team's competition ended in the semi final with a 2-7 defeat at the hands of the E57 rollers.


This weekend a number of bowlers will be travelling to Church Gresley in Derbyshire for the England squad trials.  On Sunday the County AGM will be held at Luxulyan Village Hall commencing at 14.30.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

National Fours Winners Tom Westlake, Luke Jolly, Karen Watson & Ed Dyer
After falling short in a final at each of the past two championships a team from Cornwall claimed a National Championship title on Saturday when Karen Watson, Ed Dyer, Luke Jolly & Tom Westlake put together an unbeaten run of eight games to claim the title.

During the group stages they first faced the Oxfordshire team of M Davies, J Bradbury, L Woodward & D Wiggins winning 8-4.  Next up they met the Essex team of R Wade, G Wade, J Wade & R Cordy winning 11-5.  The final group game against the Buckinghamshire team of D Owen, J Owen, V Latham & B Latham winning 7-4 to guarantee top spot in the group.

Moving into the knock out stages they first faced the Humberside team of M Bristow, C Brown, B Manning & J Sampson winning 7-4.  Next up in the last 16, 2013 winners G Cross, T Cross, G Davies & AJ Brown of Oxfordshire provided the opposition with Cornwall winning 8-7.  In the Quarter Finals the Staffordshire team of T Colclough, J Towey, A Wiiliams & A Jones were defeated 10-2.  Staffordshire again provided the opposition in the semi finals where C Kearns, M Simcock, N Tideswell & G Berrisford were defeated 8-4.

The final was against the West Midlands team of Phil Warr, Jon Pitcher, Malcolm Follis & Luke Lane.  Cornwall took the first end with a score of one with West Mids ditching the jack on the second end to pick up two.  Cornwall levelled the score on the third end.  West Midlands moved ahead over the next two ends to lead 5-2 after five ends.  Cornwall picked up successive scores of four on the 6th and 7th ends to move into a 10-5 lead going into the last end which was defended with West Mids picking up a score of two to leave the final score Cornwall 10 West Mids 7.  

The four Cornwall players, with an average age of just under 23, are now automatically invited to join the England Squad next season.

Cornwall's second team in the Fours Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore could only record one win in the group stages and finished third in group missing out on the knock out stages,

Earlier in the championships on Thursday Nigel Nicholls and Dennis Shorthouse competed in the Singles.  Nigel finished second in his group to progress to the knock out stages where he beat Hampshire's James Bucknall 12-6 in the last 32 before losing to Worcester's Ian Davis 14-8 in the last 16.  Dennis failed to win a game in his group and did not progress to the knock out stages.

On Friday Cornwall had three Pairs competing.  Gillian Cawrse & Nigel Nicholls had the best run storming through the group stages with three wins scoring 60 shots and conceding just 4.  In the last 32 they defeated Somerset's Carol & Keith Hawkins 12-10.  In the last 16 they narrowly lost 7-8 to Gloucestershire's Gill Johnson & Stuart Minchew.  Cornwall's other qualifiers Elise Daniell & Nicholas and Tom Westlake & Ed Dyer both failed to progress from the group stages.

On Sunday Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore came through the group stages as group runners up to set up a last 32 match against Northamptonshire's Dale Thomson, Callum Beale & Leigh Hall.  The Cornwall trio were in trouble early on falling behind to a 0-6 scoreline before starting to turn things around but they fell short losing 6-7 and bringing Cornwall's National Championship campaign to a close for another year.

Next weekend two teams travel to Torquay for the TLH Top Team Championship, won last year by Cornwall's Holmans.

Cornwall go into this weekend's English Short Mat Bowling Association National Championships with a strong contingent of players making the trip to Church Gresley Indoor Bowling Club in Derbyshire.

On Thursday Dennis Shorthouse & Nigel Nicholls will compete in the Singles.  Friday will see Elise Daniell & Nicholas Truscott, Gillian Cawrse & Nigel Nicholls and Tom Westlake & Ed Dyer compete in the Pairs.  

Saturday will see 2013 Fours Runners Up Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore compete alongside Tom Westlake, Luke Jolly, Ed Dyer & Karen Watson.  On Sunday 2014 Triples Runners Up Nicholas Truscott, Nigel Nicholls & Peter Hore will attempt to go one better.

BEBBINGTON CUP

On Sunday the County League Finals, the Bebbington Cup, were contested by the four area league winners at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

The four teams competing were;

West (Illogan) T Wills, M Styles, L Martin & G Fisher; C Penaluna, B Williams, L Sherman & B Kessell.
Central (Treviscoe) K Goodman, A Grimshaw, S Grimshaw & L Jolly; J Stanley, C Fry, T Jago & C Stanley.
East (Landrake) D Pengelly, H Kerr, A Holden & R Kerr; D Shorthouse, L Davey, G Davey & N Gribble.
North (Bllisland) S Matthews, H Matthews, M Webster & K Matthews; T Hodge, G Loveridge, M Crowle & M Burden.

The first round of games saw Landrake and Treviscoe share points 2 each and Illogan take maximum 4 points against Blisland.  Points were shared in the second session in the games between Treviscoe & Blisland and Landrake & Illogan.  In the final session Treviscoe took maximum points against Illogan and Landrake & Blisland shared points.

TEAM OF THREE

Betty Temple Smith, Keith Matthews and Max Burden (Blisland) won the County Team of Three beating Richard Kerr, Dennis Shorthouse and Neil Gribble ( Landrake ) by 4 shots over the two legs.

NATIONALS

There is a break from competetive action over the Easter weekend before the National Championships starting on the 9th April at Church Gresley Indoor Bowling Club in South Derbyshire.

Cornwall is again well represented this year starting with the Singles on Thursday 9th, Pairs on Friday 10th, Fours on Saturday 10th and concluding with Triples on Sunday 11th.  With two runners up places in the last two seasons could this be the year that a National title makes it way back to Cornwall?

COUNTY FINALS

The Finals of the County Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours were recently contested at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

In the quarter finals of the Singles Michael Webster (Blisland) defeated Ruth Newbury (Wadebridge) 13-2, Peter Hore (Holmans) won 13-4 against Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) and Luke Jolly booked a spot in the Semi Finals with a 7-4 win over Martin Boraston (Dobwalls).  Ed Dyer (Landrake) had a bye into the semi finals following the withdrawal of Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) who was playing in the annual St Georges Cup Fixture.

The semi finals saw Dyer take an easy 18-2 win over Webster and Hore defeat Jolly 11-8.  Hore went on to win the final 11-3 against Dyer.

In the Two Wood Pairs quarter finals Gary Davey & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) won 10-3 against Graham Reeves & Peter Skinner (Saltash).  Roy Sumner & David Balow (Marazion) defeated Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) & Karen Watson (Saltash) 9-7.  Sandra & John Worton (Ladock) won 9-7 against Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans). Graham Luke & Richard Brown (Ladock) were easy 15-4 winners against Sheila & Robert Flower (Tintagel).

In the semi finals Sumner & Balow defeated Davey & Shorthouse 11-6 and the Wortons won 11-7 against club mates Luke & Brown.  A tight final was won by the Wortons defeating Sumner and Balow 10-9.

In the Triples quarter finals Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) won 9-8 against Graham Reeves (Saltash), Heidi & Richard Kerr (Landrake).  Robert Staple, Val & Geoff Risdon (Lanteglos) defeated Mike Burnard, Bob Banks & Roy Christie (Boscastle) 11-5.  Richard Brown, Sandra & John Worton (Ladock) won 8-4 against Betty Temple-Smith (Luxulyan), Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland).  Barry Kessell, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) defeated Dennis Shorthouse, Neil Gribble (Landrake) & Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) 10-8.

Two tight semi finals saw Hore win 10-8 against Risdon and Worton defeat Fisher 10-9.  A well contested final went right down to the final two bowls with the Ladock team winning 9-8.

Inn the Fours quarter finals Diane Shorthouse, Dennis Shorthouse, Neil Gribble & Richard Kerr (Landrake) defeated Patsy Wakeley, Richard Brown, Brian Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) 11-3.  Christopher Fry, Tony Jago (Treviscoe), Karen Watson (Saltash) & Ed Dyer (Landrake) won 10-6 against Keith Williams, Tom Lapworth, Howard McCormack & Nigel Jelbert (Penlee).  Elise Daniell, Mark Eddy, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore (Holmans) eased past Cynthia Storer, Edward Wakeley, Sandra Worton & Arthur Tubb (Ladock) 13-2.  Margaret & John Menhenick, Susan Wilce and Alan Rathbone (Wadebridge) won 12-6 against Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls), Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland).

The semi finals saw Kerr win 13-5 against Dyer and Hore defeat Rathbone 12-1.  Kerr won the final against Hore 9-6.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Over the weekend Cornwall's England squad members have been in Derbyshire competing in the inaugural European Championships.

Cornwall's Peter Hore played Singles in the England '2' team which finished the event as runners up losing in the final against Wales '2'.
