SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR NORWEGIAN OPEN
Over the past weekend five local bowlers made the trip to Skein in Norway to take part in the Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open which featured an entry of 150 bowlers drawn from across Europe.

David Studden (Holmans) was unbeaten in group thirteen to qualify straight through to the last 32 in the Cup competition.  David's results in the group stages were Andre Malmgren (NOR) 12-5, Monika Borgo (SWE) 18-3, Nico Segers (BEL) 14-7, Bjarne Andersson (SWE) 15-5 and Ben Holbrook (ENG) 12-6.  Into the Cup competition David defeated Kjell Bjerkseth (NOR) 12-7 in the last 32 before losing 4-9 to Paul Doherty (IRE).  David comes away from the event with 105 ranking points to lie 194th in the world rankings and 63rd in the Order of Merit.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) was also unbeaten in group twenty one to go straight through to the last 32 in the Cup competition.  Nigel's results in the group stages were Thomas Olsson (SWE) 25-3, Steven Roberts (ENG) 11-7, John Egil Stanes (NOR) 21-6, Mio Kontic (ENG) 20-7 and Agnetha Olsson (SWE) 20-3.  Into the Cup competition Nigel lost to Sandar Johansen (SWE) 8-10.  Nigel comes away from the event with 95 ranking points moving up two places to sixth in the world rankings and three places to 7th in the Order of Merit.

Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) lost his first game in group twenty three before winning four in a row to qualify for the Cup competition.  Steve's results in the group stages were Eroll Morina (SWE) 8-12, Gunn Ellen Bekkevold (NOR) 8-4, Johan Andersson (SWE) 10-8, Daniel Svedin (SWE) 28-3 and Rune Lifjell (NOR) 12-10.  Steve lost in the last 64 to Sandar Johansen (SWE) 14-4.  Steve scored 82 ranking points over the weekend to lie 209th in the world rankings and 55th in the Order of Merit.

Peter Hore (Holmans) started with a draw in group twenty five followed by three wins.  A loss on Sunday morning left Peter in third place and into the Plate competition.  Peter's results in the group stages were Paul Doherty (IRE) 11-11, Tobias Egestrand (SWE) 15-6, Robin Andre Jensen (NOR) 18-6, Bengt Runholm (SWE) 11-8 and Peter Sayer (ENG) 5-12.  Peter enjoyed a strong run in the Plate competition.  Winning 16-3 against Paul Perrson (SWE) in the last 32, 18-6 against Rune Kløvtveit (NOR) in the last 16, 14-2 against Andrew Cockcroft (IRE) in the Quarter Finals, 12-10 against Daniel Wennberg (SWE) in the Semi Finals.  The final against Paul Seaman (ENG) was closely contested,  halfway through Peter led 5-4, Paul took 2 on the 7th end with Peter taking 2 back on the 8th end to lead 7-6.  Paul moved into the lead with 3 on the 9th end and a further 1 on the 10th end.  Peter pulled back two on the 11th end to trail 9-10. On the final end Peter held a game winning position however Paul used the last bowl of the game to take the shot and the Plate title by 9 shots to 11.  Peter scored 60 ranking points over the weekend to move up four places to 33rd in the world rankings and thirteen places to 28th in the Order of Merit.   

Elise Daniell (Holmans) started with a couple of losses in group eight  going on to earn two wins and a draw to qualify for the Plate competition.  Elise's results in the group stages were Kjell Bjerkseth (NOR) 10-13, Nathan Haire (IRE) 8-12,  Eren Wangen (NOR) 15-5, Ingvar Nelson (SWE) 8-8 and Leif Linder (SWE) 15-4.  Elise lost in the last 64 of the Plate Competition to Rune Kløvtveit (NOR) 5-16.  Elise scored 32 ranking points over the weekend to retain 34th place in the world rankings and dropping 4 places in the Order of Merit.

The next SMPT Singles Tournament is the British Open over the weekend of 6th and 7th January.


ESMBA / TLH OPEN COMPETITIONS
Also played last weekend were the ESMBA/TLH Open Pairs and Fours Competitions at the Torquay Leisure Hotels complex.  Duloe, Alan Trubshaw, Martin Boraston, Mark Slack and Caroline Trubshaw were runners up in the plate competition of the Fours.

ESMBA OPEN FOURS
This coming weekend the ESMBA bring their Open Fours Competition to the Manor House Hotel at Okehampton, Devon.

Four local teams have entered the competition

Dennis & Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) & Steve Williamson (Luxulyan) are joined by David Glennerster (Devon).  Peter Hore, Elise Daniell (Holmans) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) are joined by Anthony Fautley (Essex).  John & Sandra Worton, Steve Smith (St Newlyn East) & Tony Jago (Withiel).  Martin Boraston, John Reed, Alan & Caroline Trubshaw (Duloe).

COUNTY FOURS
On Sunday the County Fours will be played at Carnmoggas with 24 teams entered.  Play gets under way at 0900 and expected to run through to around 1600.  The top 8 teams will qualify for the County Finals and earn County Points.
