CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
News Release 4 July 2021
The Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association's Management Committee met on Monday 28th June to discuss plans for the 2021/22 season.
In a statement issued on Wednesday 30th June the management committee advised members of its decision to withdraw from the ESMBA Inter County Championship for the 2021/22 season citing a number of reasons for doing so. Amongst them, the association would face increased costs of hosting home matches as a result of less than half the usual number of players being involved in each fixture, uncertainty over which counties would be involved in the competition and the position of County Team Manager remaining one of the unfilled vacancies on the County Committee.
During the meeting officers reported that to date around half of the members and just under half of the clubs that were registered at the end of the 2019-20 season had re-registered for 2021-22. A number of clubs that between them fielded 70 teams in the 2019-20 winter league season have expressed concern about their ability to field some or all of their league teams this coming winter.
Also on Wednesday the ESMBA announced changes to the current rules that allow 'Covid Safe' clubs to play.
With effect from 1st July whilst the Rule of Six remains in place the ESMBA has allowed
- Inter Club Competition.
- Allowing a nominated player on each match to undertake measuring for shots.
- Scoreboards will be allowed providing a nominated player makes updates.
- Club bowls may be used by one player per session.
- Live bowls in the ditch can be marked by a nominated player.
Further revisions to the conditions of play attached to 'Safe Bowls' status are expected later in the month in line with any changes in restrictions from the Government.
