CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 10 February 2019

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Saturday Cornwall's Premier & A Teams travelled to Bristol Indoor Bowls Club for the Inter County Championship Preliminary Round.

The Premier Team faced Avon and were never in trouble in the match securing the win with a session to spare.  In the first session Cornwall won three out of the four games.  In the Singles Gillian Cawrse and James Smith won 15-6 and 17-5 respectively.  In the Pairs Graham Reeves and Keith Williams win 17-7.  Only one point was dropped by Cornwall in the second session.  In Triples John Thomas, Mike Dyer and Kevin Williams drew 11-11.  Betty Temple Smith, John Dodd and Max Burden won 9-8.  In the Fours Nathan Waters, Nicholas Truscott, Martin Boraston and Luke Jolly won 8-7.  Rose Dyer, Richard Kerr, Neil Gribble & Callum Beale won 22-2.  At the halfway point Cornwall led 13 points to 3.

The third session saw Cawrse & Smith completed a clean sweep in the Singles winning 17-6 and 10-8 respectively.  John Worton & Chris Roberts won 13-12 in the Pair but Avon claimed the bonus points.  Cornwall took all the points on offer in the final session,  In the Triples Williams won 14-9 and Burden won 14-10.  In the Fours Jolly won 17-5 and Beale won 15-10.  Cornwall won the match 33 points to 7 and 224 shots to 138.  In the Quarter Finals Cornwall will face Surrey over the weekend of 23rd and 24th February.

The A Team got off the the worst possible start losing all four mats in the first session.  Cornwall fared better in the second session winning three mats.  In the Triples Lynn Smith, Carol Dodd and Dennis Shorthouse won 13-12.  In the Fours Meg Horrell, Heidi Kerr, Tony Jago and Ken Horrell won 10-5 and David Langsworthy, Beryl Langsworthy, Lynne Davey & Gary Davey won 12-5 leaving Cornwall trailing 6 points to 10 in the match at the halfway point.

In the third session Mark Payne won 15-6 in the Singles and Des Pengelly and Alan Holden win 15-5 in the Pairs but neither bonus points came Cornwall's way leaving them trailing 10-18 going into the final session.  The final session became a tense affair as Cornwall fought hard to grab an what looked unlikely victory.  In the Triples Shorthouse won 18-6 and in the fours Davey won 13-5.  Facing a large count against on the final end Brenda Sleep drew to cut down the score and whilst not winning her game secured the Triples bonus points to take the match score to 16-20 with one game to finish.  The result of Horrell's match came down to a measure which went against Cornwall to leave the game score 10-10.  Cornwall secured the Fours bonus points to lose by the closest of margins 19 points to 21 and 174 shots to 182.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Five local bowlers travelled to Chelmsford over the weekend to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour English Masters competition which featured a full entry of 192 bowlers.  

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) and Peter Hore (Holmans) were drawn together in Group 19.  Nigel won the match between the two going on to top the group with 15 points with Peter second in the group on 12 points.  Elise Daniell (Holmans) won three games in Group 22 to finish second in Group.  David Studden (Holmans) won four games to finish second in Group 29.  Chris Selby (Holmans) won two games in group 31 to finish one of four bowlers on six points and went through to the Shield competition.

In the main cup knockout First Round Nicholls lost to Nigel Charles (NIR) 4-10.  Daniell lost 7-16 to Chris McWhinnie (WAL).  Hore lost 11-12 to Greg Wade (ENG).  Studden defeated Joseph Beattie (NIR) 11-8.  Studden defeated Stephen Gale (IOM) 12-7 in the second round before losing 6-13 to Joel Hager (SWE) in the third round.

Chris Selby reached the second round of the Shield competition losing to Greg Puttock 4-12.
