CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE 14 October 2018

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to the Dorset Bowls Resort at Bere Regis to take on Dorset in the third round of ESMBA Inter County Championship group matches.

In the Premier fixture Cornwall endured a disappointing day against a Dorset team that are averaging 29 out of a possible 40 points a match so far this season.

Cornwall won just 4 of the 16 games throughout the day with the final score Dorset 32 points 214 shots Cornwall 8 points 146 shots.  Cornwall's points scored by a James Smith in the Singles winning both his games 14-10 and 14-8.  Ray Jeffery, Percy Tripp & Kevin Williams won their morning Triples 13-8 and Dennis Shorthouse, Richard Kerr, Neil Gribble & Callum Beale won their afternoon Fours 8-6.  Dorset took all the bonus points from the match.  

In the day's other match in Cornwall's group Devon bounced back from their disappointing opening results to win 22-18 away to Somerset.  Dorset are now 31 points clear on 87 points with Somerset second on 56, Cornwall third on 52 and Devon fourth on 45.

The A Team fixture saw Cornwall take 3 points from the first session.  Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) won 18-8 in Singles and Worton & David Topliffe drew 11-11 in the Pairs.  The second session saw Cornwall take another 3 points with Dianne Shorthouse, Bob Smith & Brenda Sleep drawing 11-11 in the Triples and Heidi Kerr, Nathan Waters, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell winning 11-8.  Cornwall trailed 6-10 at the lunch break.

Cornwall failed to claim a game point in the afternoon Singles and Pairs but did hold onto the Singles bonus points to move the score to 8-18 in Dorset's favour.  The final session saw Cornwall win on three mats.  In the Triples Lynn Smith, Mike Webster & Keith Williams and Dianne Shorthouse, Bob Smith & Brenda Sleep won 21-7 & 10-7 respectively.  Heidi Kerr, Nathan Waters, Tony Jago & Ken Horrell won 12-10.  The bonus points were shared with Cornwall taking the Triples and Dorset the Fours for a final match score of Dorset 24 points 181 shots Cornwall 16 points 176 shots.

Somerset drew the other match in the group with Devon 20-20 to continue to lead the table on 76 points, Dorset move into second with 67 points, Cornwall are now third on 59 points and Devon fourth on 38.

The Inter County Championship takes a three week break with Cornwall next in action on Sunday 4th November when they host Somerset at Carnmoggas.

COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
On Saturday 33 bowlers competed over two session for one of eight places in the Finals of the County Two Wood Singles.

From the morning session David Topliffe (Boscastle) qualified from Group One with 6 pts + 26 shots, Graham Reeves (Saltash) topped Group Two with 6 +22.  Alan Holden (Landrake) came through Group Three with 6 +19 and Callum Beale (Withiel) topped Group Four with 4 +9.  The afternoon session saw Des Pengelly (Landrake) top Group One with 6 +7.  Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) topped Group Two with 5 +20, Tony Smith (Luxulyan) came through Group Three on 4 +15 and Bob Banks (Boscastle) took the final spot with 4 +6 in Group Four.

The finalists will compete for the county title back at Carnmoggas on Sat 9th March.

COUNTY TWO WOOD SINGLES
On Sunday 30 pairs will compete at Carnmoggas for the eight places in the County FInals for the County Two Wood Pairs.
