NEWS RELEASE 8 January 2017

COUNTY FOUR WOOD PAIRS
Over the weekend the qualification of the County Four Wood Pairs was contested at Carnmoggas with 21 Pairs playing on Saturday and 22 on Sunday with five group winners and three best runners up going through to a single knockout round each day.

On Saturday Richard & Heidi Kerr (Landrake) topped Group One with an unbeaten 6 points +15 shots,  second placed Mike Webster & David Topliffe (Blisland) also qualified for the knockout round with 4 -3.  Group Two saw Neil Gribble (Landrake) and Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) dominant with an unbeaten 6 +28, second placed Roy Sumner (Marazion) & Howard McCormack (Penlee) missed the cut with 4 -9.  In Group Three Bill Sharp & Robert Rawlings (Dobwalls) topped the group also unbeaten 6 +15, closest rivals and failing to make the cut were Graham Luke & Richard Brown (Ladock) with 2 -2.  Group Four was topped by David Balow & David Foulds (Marazion) with 4 +17.  Peter Skinner & Graham Reeves (Saltash) qualified for the knockout round with 4 +13.  Mike & Gillian Styles (Redruth) topped Group Five with 5 +7.  Tony Baldwin & Alan Jones (Callington) took a large win over John Nixon (Saltash) & Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) to take second and a knockout spot on 4 +13.

In the knockout round Baldwin & Jones defeated the Kerr's 13-11.  Skinner & Reeves met Balow & Foulds for a second time on the day winning 9-4.  Sharp & Rawlings were 9-5 winners against Webster & Topliffe.  Gribble & Cawrse brushed aside the Styles' 17-1.  

On Sunday Peter Hore & Elise Daniell (Holmans) topped Group One with an unbeaten 6 +22, Keith Matthews & Max Burden (Blisland) took one of the runners-up spots with 4 +19.  Chris Harris & Terry Trevorrow (Hayle) topped Group Two with 5 +4 ahead of Sheila Hodge (Liskeard) & Mike Scott (East Taphouse) on 3 -14 which was not enough to qualify for the knockout round.  In Group Three John & Sandra Worton (Ladock) qualified as group winners with 4 +21 ahead of Gary Davey (Landrake) & Martin Boraston (Landrake) on 4 +14, enough to see the through to the knockout round.  Tom Westlake & Luke Jolly (Treviscoe) recorded the weekend's best score with 6 +31 to top Group Four.  Karen Watson (Saltash) & Kath Goodman (Treviscoe) missed out on qualification finishing on 4 +8.  The final group winners were Alan Holden & Des Pengelly (Landrake) who were unbeaten on 6 +12 to finish ahead of Carol & Graham Ford (Ladock) who qualified with a score of 4 +12.

In the knockout round the Ford's won 18-3 against Harris & Trevorrow.  Hore & Daniell met Matthews & Burden for a second time winning again 6-5.  Westlake & Jolly defeated the Worton's 13-4 and Davey & Boraston won 13-8 against Holden & Pengelly.   

The eight qualifiers will contest the finals on Saturday 11th March.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
The final matches in Cornwall's groups were played on Sunday at ISCA when Devon hosted Somerset.

Somerset came out winners in both the Premier and A Team fixtures by 30-10 and 29-11 points respectively.

In the Premier competition Devon's 10 points was enough for them to overhaul Cornwall on shot difference to take top spot on the group with both Counties finishing on 130 points.  Cornwall's second place finish will see them face Gloucestershire in the Quarter Finals expected to be on the 19th February.

In the  A Team competition Somerset overhauled Cornwall for top spot finishing on 143 points to Cornwall's 141.  Cornwall will face North Yorkshire on the weekend on 4th/5th February.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
This weekend three local bowlers make the trip to Sweden to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Swedish Masters at the Nordby Supermarket Halen in Stromstad.

Peter Hore faces Swedes Dick Almen & John Duffy, Norwegians Odd Egil Hansen & Lars-Rune Lauritzen and England's Stephen Proctor in Group Five.

Elise Daniell faces Swede Lillian Gjermo, Norwegians Gunnar Frantzen & Roald Midteide and England's Alex Kley & Dominic Reed in Group Ten.

Nigel Nicholls faces Swede Bengt Goran Clemensson and England's Mark Courtney, Mio Kontic, Paul Baller & Steve Puttock in Group Fifteen.

COMING UP
On Saturday 21st the ESMBA host an Open Singles competition ahead of the Open Triples on Sunday 22nd.  Locally the final round of Inter Area League games will be played on the 22nd.  After a break on the last weekend of January the County A Team are expected to be in action against North Yorkshire on the weekend on 4th/5th February.  On the same weekend a group of local bowlers are entered in the Short Mat Players Tour English Masters to be played in Bromsgrove.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
The final group matches in Cornwall's groups were played on Sunday when Devon hosted Somerset at ISCA in Exeter.

Devon lost both the Premier and A Team fixtures by 10-30 and 11-29 respectively.  Devon top the Premier table on shot difference from Cornwall.  Somerset overhauled Cornwall for top spot in the A Team table by two points.

Cornwall's Premier Team face Gloucestershire in the quarter finals of the knockout competition scheduled for the weekend of 18th/19th February.  The A Team will meet North Yorkshire in the preliminary round of the knockout competition scheduled for the weekend of 4th/5th February.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
