| | CCSMBA NEWS RELEASE 2 August 2016 Short Mat Players Tour UK Open 6 local bowlers travel to Bromsgrove over the weekend of 20th and 21st August to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour UK Open. The organisers of the SMPT series have recently announced a change to the player rankings introducing a rolling total reflecting performances over the previous 12 events. After the conclusion of the UK Open any ranking points earned the event will be added as normal, however the points from the UK Open 2014, 12 events previously, will be removed prior to the updated rankings being published. So what does this mean for our local players currently featured in the rankings? In short, players who performed exceptionally well 12 events ago, must match their finishing positions or face a net loss in the rankings. Players who only secured a small number of points could realise big gains, whilst players who have not entered this year's UK Open stand to plummet down the table. Peter Hore has most points to lose with 49 coming off his total after the event after reaching the quarter finals of the Plate knockout in 2014. Richard Kerr loses 36 after reaching the last 32 of the Plate in 2014. Dennis Shorthouse loses 31 after reaching the Plate in 2014. Nigel Nicholls & Tom Westlake are set to lose 9 from there totals and Elise Daniell loses 6. The competition follows the usual format with 144 entries split into 24 groups of 6 with the top two from each group go through to the main knockout and a chance to pay for the £500 top prize. Third and Fourth in the group go into a plate knockout and the fifth and sixth play in the wooden spoon knockout. The pick of the draw from a local perspective sees Peter Hore (Holmans) (SMPT Ranking 109), Elise Daniell (Holmans) (178) and Tom Westlake (502) (Treviscoe) drawn to face each other in Group 17 along with Victor Andersson (Swe) (105), Antony Bull (Eng) (224) and Tom Harris (Wal) (383). Dennis Shorthouse (206) (Landrake) faces a tough draw in Group 11 where he will face SMPT number 2 ranked player Dimitri Payne (Belguim) and 27th ranked Sam Harvey (27) (Wales). Making up the group are Suzanne Finlay (70) (NI), Paul Seaman (200) (Eng) and Robin Armstrong (321) (Eng). Nigel Nicholls (120) (Newlyn Trinity) faces SMPT number 3 Joel Hager (Swe), Andy Thompson (88) (Eng), Christine Holland (313) (IOM), Russell Stallibrass (444) (Eng) & Tone Bøe (560) (Nor) in Group 18. Richard Kerr (115) (Landrake) faces Tommy Dahlgren (36) (Swe), & Ken Sleat (81) (Eng), Michael Collister (315) (IOM), Christer Nordin (333) (Swe) and Wendy Ford (N/A) (Eng) in Group 20. Local bowlers are booked into play in a number of other SMPT competitions during the season when England and County fixtures allow including the Norwegian Open on 29/30 October, World Fours 3 December, World Pairs 4 December, Swedish Masters 14/15 January, English Masters 4/5 February. A measure of how popular the SMPT competitions have become is that the English Masters sold out within a day of entries opening. Summer League The 2016 Summer League is under way with the current tables available to view at http://www.nicholastruscott.co.uk/2008site/index.php?pg=tabledisplayallsummer. County Competitions Entry forms are with club secretaries and available to download from the CCSMBA website www.ccsmba.co.uk. Closing date for entries is 31st August. County Team Trials & Inter County The Inter County Championship reverts back to groups of four with Dorset rejoining Cornwall, Devon & Somerset in a South West group. A tight schedule sees all six group games played before the end of November followed by a more than two month gap before the start of the knockout stages in February. County Team Manager Nigel Nicholls has issued invitations to the Team Trials on Saturday 10th September ahead of the Inter County Rinks Competition on the following day and first group game away to Dorset on Sunday 18th September. | | | | | | |
