COUNTY TWO WOOD PAIRS

51 pairs competed in the qualification competition for the County Two Wood Pairs across two days at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

On Saturday 24 teams competed split into six groups with six group winners and the two best runners up progressing to a knockout round.

Jean Welch and John James (Marazion) were unbeaten in Group One with 6 points +27 shots.  Richard Brown (Ladock) and David Studden (Illogan) were also unbeaten with 6 +30 in Group Two.  After drawing their first game two wins saw Kath Goodman & Karen Watson (Treviscoe) take Group Three with 5 +27.  David Foulds & Don Falck also qualified from the group with 4 +7.  

Dennis Shorthouse & Gary Davey (Landrake) were unbeaten with 6 +24 in Group Four and were joined the the play offs by Joe Dixon (Withiel) & Keith Matthews (Blisland) with 4 +26 form the same group.  Margaret & John Menhenick (Wadebridge) were Group Five winners with 4 +15 and rounding off the group winners were Martin Boraston & Derek Newton (Dobwalls) with an unbeaten 6 +35, the day's best score.

In the play off round  David Foulds & Don Falck defeated Margaret & John Menhenick 16-8.  Martin Boraston & Derek Newton were 10-4 winners against Joe Dixon & Keith Matthews.  Kath Goodman & Karen Watson defeated Richard Brown & David Studden 6-12.  In the final game Dennis Shorthouse & Gary Davey were 16-7 winners against Jean Welch & John James.

On Sunday 27 teams competed split into groups of six, five and four of four.

In Group One Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) & Max Burden (Blisland) took top spot with 5 +18.  Meg & Ken Horrell (Withiel) also progressed from the group as one of the two runners up on 4 +5.  Group Two was won by Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) on 6 +10.  From the same group Janet Carter & David Topliffe (St Minver) claimed the second runners up spot with 4 +1.  Roy Sumner & David Balow (Marazion) were group Group Three winners with 5 +14.  

Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) were the days top scorers in winning Group Four with 6 +20.  Carol & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) were Group Five winners with 4 +17 and completing the qualifiers were Diane & Martin Williams (Penlee) with 4 +12.

The play off round saw Brenda Sleep & Max Burden defeat Diane & Martin Williams 8-5.  Elise Daniell & Peter Hore were comfortable 14-1 winners over Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts.  Meg & Ken Horrell defeated Janet Carter & David Topliffe 13-9 and rounding of the qualifiers were Roy Sumner & David Balow who were 12-3 winners against Carol & Graham Ford.

The eight pairs who have qualified for the finals will return to Carnmoggas in March to decide the overall winners.

County competition action continues this weekend when 22 teams compete in the County Mixed Fours qualifier at Carnmoggas on Sunday.

NATIONAL QUALIFIERS

Entries for the National Championship qualifiers have increased again this year which hopefully will lead to Cornwall receiving more places in the main championships to be held in April next year at Church Gresley Bowling Club near Derby.

Inter County Championship

On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Bere Regis to meet Dorset in the latest round of ESMBA Inter County Championship fixtures.

The Premier Team suffered a heavy defeat picking up points in only 5 of the 16 games played.  In the first session David Studden picked up a 13-12 win in the Singles.  The Four of John Worton, Graham Reeves, Ken Horrell and Chris Roberts took a hard fought 6-6 draw in the second session leaving Cornwall trailing by 3 points to 13 at the halfway point in the match.

In the third session again only saw points scored on only one mat with Elise Daniell and Mark Eddy scoring a 15-9 win in the Pairs.  With the match result beyond doubt Cornwall scored three points in the final session with a 11-8 win for Graham Ford, Gillian Cawrse and Percy Tripp in the Triples and a 7-7 draw for Derek Elliott, Neil Gribble, Luke Jolly and Peter Hore in the Fours.

The final match score Dorset 32 points 196 shots Cornwall 8 points 154 shots leaving Cornwall well adrift at the bottom of the South West group table.

Team manager Nigel Nicholls said after the match  "a disappointing result although individual performances were better than the result suggests.  I cannot fault the effort but we need to be more consistent throughout the whole day."

The A Team enjoyed their best match of the season so far with a convincing victory.  The first session saw Cornwall off to the best possible start winning all four games.  In the Singles Keith Matthews won 15-10 and Keith Williams 11-10.  In the Pairs Bill Sharp and Brenda Sleep won 14-11 and Betty Temple Smith and Max Burden won 24-7.  Dorset hit back in the second session taking three of the four games with Meg Horrell, Jim Stanley, Joe Dixon and Carolyn Stanley winning 9-4 in the Fours to ensure Cornwall maintained a lead going into the afternoon session.

The third session again saw a strong Cornwall performance with three wins out of Four.  Keith Matthews 17-12 and Keith Williams 17-10 ensuring a clean sweep of points for Cornwall in the Singles.  Bill Sharp and Brenda Sleep completed a double in the Pairs with a 15-8 win.  Cornwall took both discipline bonus points to ensure they could not lose the match with a session to spare.  A shared final session with Tony Jago, Alan Holden and Gary Davey winning 18-3 in the Triples and Kath Goodman, Sheila Hodge, Jim Rule and Terry Bray taking a 10-6 win in the Fours.  Cornwall claimed the bonus points in the Fours but missed out on the Triples points by three.

The final match score Dorset 14 points 147 shots Cornwall 26 points 189 shots moving Cornwall above Dorset in the South West group table.

Cornwall are next in action on the 10 November when Dorset will be the visitors to Carnmoggas for the return fixture.

County Two Wood Singles

On Saturday 43 bowlers competed in the qualification competition for the County Two Wood Singles at Carnmoggas, split into two sessions with five group winners and three runners up progressing for each session to a knockout round.

In the morning Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) claimed Group One with 6 +23 and second placed Gerald Fisher (Illogan) claimed a runners-up spot with 4 +8.  David Balow (Marazion) won a three way tie in Group Two with 4 +8 and Henry Kendall (Withiel) claimed a runners-up spot with 4 +2.  Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) took the best score of the session with 6 +28 in Group Three ahead of Neil Gribble (Landrake) on 4 +5.  David Foulds (Marazion) took a tight Group Four with 4 -1 and rounding off the qualifiers was Keith Matthews (Blisland) with 5 +17 in Group Five.

In the play offs Henry Kendall defeated Neil Gribble 11-10.  David Balow defeated club mate David Foulds 14-7 to score his first County ranking points.  Nigel Nicholls defeated Dennis Shorthouse 13-7 and Gerald Fisher was a 11-6 winner against Keith Matthews.

The afternoon session saw Martin Boraston (Dobwalls) win Group One with 6 +8 after defeating Peter Hore (Holmans) 14-11 in the final group game.  Peter progressed as one of the runners up with 4 +10.  Robin Burden (Wadebridge) took Group Two with 6 +13.  John Worton (Ladock) claimed Group Three with the same score.  In Group Four a draw in the final group game between Tom Lapworth (Penlee) and Jim Stanley (Treviscoe) saw both go through with 5 +14 and 5 +7 respectively.  Group Five saw Keith Williams equal the day's best score of 6 +28 to top the group with Michael Webster (Blisland) claiming the final runners up spot with 4 +9.

The play offs saw Peter Hore defeat Michael Webster 16-4.  Martin Boraston won 16-8 against Keith Williams.  Jim Stanley defeated Robin Burden 14-7 and John Worton was a 19-2 winner against Tom Lapworth.

County Two Wood Pairs

This forthcoming weekend the County Two Wood Pairs qualification competition will be played with 54 pairs entered, 27 on each day with eight, four for each day, to progress to the County Finals at the end of the season.

COUNTY FOURS

On Sunday 104 bowlers competed in the first county championship qualification competition of the new season, the County Fours, at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

The 26 teams were split into six groups, one of six and five of four with the six group winners and top two runners going forward to the county finals at the end of the season.

In Group One a 10-10 draw in the final game of the day against Betty Temple-Smith (Luxulyan), David Abbis, Terry Bray & Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) saw Joan Boddy, Meg Horrell, Joe Dixon & Ken Horrell win the group with 5 points +9 shots.  Group Two saw a scores of over 20 recorded in three of the six games and three of the four teams finishing on 4 points. The group win went to Kath Goodman, Tony Jago, Luke Jolly and Karen Watson (Treviscoe) with +41 shots.  Second in group went to Elise Daniell, Derek Elliott (Holmans), Nicholas Truscott (Luxulyan) and Peter Hore (Holmans) with +16 shots enough to take the first runners up spot.

Group Three finished with two teams tied for top spot on 4 points +14 shots.  The top spot going to Robert Rawlings, Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) & Max Burden (Blisland) whose 15-1 win against Robert James, Margaret Jenkin, Raymond Jeffery & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) proved to be the deciding score.  The Newlyn team also go forward to the finals claiming the second runners up spot.

Group Four winners were Dennis Shorthouse, Heidi Kerr, Richard Kerr & Neil Gribble (Landrake) with 5 points +9 shots.  Group Five saw a tense finish with Graham Sleep, David Griffin, Martin Boraston & Derek Newton (Dobwalls) losing 3-11 to Gerald Fisher, Linda Martin, Joe Coups & David Studden (Illogan) but winning the group with 4 points +12 shots, one shots ahead of the Illogan team.

The only team to record three wins on the day were Clarence Stapleton, Jim Watson (St Stephen), Carol Ford & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) finishing with 6 pts +35 shots.

The qualifiers will play for the County Championship title on Saturday 15 March 2014 at Carnmoggas.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall travel to Dorset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship.  With a full squad available to choose from Team Manager Nigel Nicholls makes several changes in a bid to find the teams first wins of the season.

INTER COUNTY v SOMERSET

On Sunday 6 October Cornwall faced Somerset in the second round of matches in the ESMBA Inter County Championship group stages at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

In the Premier Team match the first session was drawn with both teams taking two wins apiece, for Cornwall Nigel Nicholls won 14-12 in the Singles and Elise Daniell and Mark Eddy took at 14-10 win in the Pairs.  The second session was also drawn with Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Brian Wakeley winning in the Triples and Derek Elliott, Neil Gribble, Luke Jolly & Peter Hore taking an 8-7 win in the Fours.  At the halfway point Cornwall the match was tied Cornwall 8 points 78 shots, Somerset 8 points 88 shots.

The third session saw Somerset ensure that they could not lose the match claiming all four games together with the shots bonus points for the Singles and Pairs.  Facing a second successive heavy match defeat Cornwall dug deep in the final session to claim 10 of the 12 points on offer.  In the Triples Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Brian Wakeley claimed a second win on the day winning 13-6.  In the Fours Derek Elliott, Neil Gribble, Luke Jolly & Peter Hore were 13-3 winners and John Worton, Brenda Sleep, Ken Horrell & Chris Roberts won 11-4.  The final match score Cornwall 18 points 160 shots Somerset 22 points 170 shots.

In the days other match Dorset defeated Devon 32 points to 8 taking Dorset to the top of the table and leaving Cornwall somewhat adrift at the bottom.

Cornwall's A Team took a solitary win in the first session thanks to Keith Williams in the Singles winning 12-11.  The second session points were shared with Cornwall winning both Triples and Somerset both Fours.  For Cornwall Melba Kitt, Sandra Worton & Henry Kendall won 9-7 and Tony Jago, Alan Holden & Gary Davey won 14-5.  At the lunch break Somerset led 10 points to 6 and 114 shots to 60.

The afternoon Triples saw points shared with Joe Dixon taking a 12-9 win in the Singles and Betty Temple-Smith & Max Burden winning 16-9.  Somerset claimed both bonus the Singles and Pairs bonus points to lead 18 points to 10 going into the last session.  The final session saw Cornwall claim a solitary win, Sheila Hodge, Jim Rule, Carol Ford & Terry Bray winning 12-9 in the Fours.  The bonus points were shared from the session with Somerset taking the Triples and Cornwall the Fours to leave the final score Cornwall 14 points 137 shots Somerset 26 points 202 shots.

COUNTY COMPETITIONS

The County Championships get underway on Sunday with 108 bowlers in 27 teams taking part in the County Fours at Carnmoggas vying for the 8 places available in the end of season county finals.

ENGLAND

On Saturday Cornwall's England squad members take part in the penultimate squad day ahead of November's British Isles Championships in Ireland.
