CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE – 16 September 2012

 

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Cornwall opened there defence of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation titles on Sunday against Dorset at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowls Club, the new home the Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association.

 

Premier Team

 

The Premier Team started with a couple of wins and a draw in the first session.  In the Singles Nigel Nicholls was an 18-9 winner whilst in the Pairs Richard Brown & David Studden were 12-9 winners and Graham Reeves & Nicholas Truscott snatched a 12-12 draw with the last wood of the game.  The second session, the morning Triples and Fours, saw Cornwall pickup seven of the eight points on offer.  In the Triples Graham Ford, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley won 12-5 and Patsy Wakeley, Neil Gribble & Chris Roberts drew 8-8.  The fours saw Elise Daniell, Derek Elliot, Linda Martin and Gerald Fisher were 13-8 winners and Kath Goodman, Melba Kitt, Gillian Cawrse and Percy Tripp won 11-3.  At the halfway stage Cornwall led by 12 points to 4 and 100 shots to 70.

 

The third session points were shared  with Peter Hore claiming a 12-12 draw in the Singles and Graham Reeves and Nicholas Truscott winning 19-10 in the Pairs.  The shots bonus points in the Singles were shared and Cornwall claimed the Pairs to leave the match score at 18-10 with a session to play.  The final session saw Cornwall score just three of the eight points on offer.   Graham Ford, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley drew 9-9 in the Triples and Elise Daniell, Derek Elliot, Linda Martin and Gerald Fisher were 12-7 winners in the Fours.  Dorset took the Triples bonus points and Cornwall the Fours.  The final match score Cornwall 23 points 180 shots Dorset 17 points 161 shots.

The A Team started with a shared first session with Luke Jolly winning 17-10 in the Singles and Keith Williams and Mike Widger taking a 17-11 win in the Pairs.  A strong second session saw Cornwall take control of the outcome of the match claiming seven of the eight points on offer.  In the Triples Tony Jago, Henry Kendall & Keith Matthews drew 10-10 and  Mark Albon, Gary Davey & Max Burden won 14-6.  Both Fours claimed victory, Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Terry Bray & Peter Hamley 15-8 and Meg Horrell, Dennis Shorthouse, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton 17-6.  At the halfway stage Cornwall led the match by 11 points to 5 and 111 shots to 76.

 

The third session saw points shared with Cornwall winning both Singles, Luke Jolly 15-13 and Martin Boraston 17-12, and Dorset winning both Pairs.  Cornwall claimed the Singles bonus points and Dorset the Pairs to leave the match score at 17-11 going into the last session which Cornwall would dominate winning on all four mats.  In the Triples Tony Jago, Henry Kendall & Keith Matthews won 15-4 and Mark Albon, Gary Davey & Max Burden won 12-5.  In the Fours Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Terry Bray & Peter Hamley won 9-8 and Meg Horrell, Dennis Shorthouse, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton won 8-6.  Cornwall claimed both sets of bonus points to claim a comprehensive victory, Cornwall 29 points 207 shots Dorset 11 points 159 shots.

Cornwall will be looking to continue the good start to the season when they travel to Taunton on Sunday (23rd September) to face Somerset who’s Premier Team suffered a heavy defeat and A Team drew with Devon in their opening fixtures on Saturday.
