INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

On Sunday Cornwall’s Premier Team travelled to Bristol to face Surrey in the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition.

Cornwall started strongly claiming all four games in the first session with Peter Hore claiming seven shots on the last two ends of his singles game against fellow England squad member Mark Jones to win 15-13,  Nigel Nicholls claimed his game 15-9.  In the pairs Richard Brown & David Studden were 15-5 winners and Margaret Jenkin & Nicholas Truscott held on for a 13-12 win.  Surrey hit back strongly in the second session, triples and fours, claiming all four games to level the score at 8-8 at the halfway stage.

The second session of singles and pairs again saw Cornwall on top with three wins out of four.  In the singles Nigel Nicholls claiming an 18-9 victory whilst Peter Hore just missed out going down 13-14.  The pairs saw Margaret Jenkin & Nicholas Truscott win 18-9 and Richard Brown & David Studden get the better of a tight game to win 12-11.  Cornwall claimed both sets of bonus points to lead the match 18-10, three points short of overall victory, with a session to play. 

Surrey looked to have wrapped up the overall match victory in the final session triples and fours but the Cornwall triple of Graham Reeves, Ken Horrell and Brian Wakeley had other ideas and Brian kept calm to claim victory with the last bowl of their game to take Cornwall onto 20 points.  With wins in the other three games and both sets of bonus points secured Surrey also finished on 20 points with the shots 1 in favour of Surrey 166-167.

The rules of the competition meant that the shots bonus points were removed from the scores to leave both counties on 16 points, both having won 8 games during the match.  The match would be decided by using the tie break method of three nominated bowlers from each county playing a single end of singles to determine the result.  Peter Hore was first to finish claiming his one end against Surrey’s Roger Smith.  David Studden bowled a well executed push and stay with his last wood to snatch his play off against Rob Edwards in turn securing the match victory for Cornwall, this left Nigel Nicholls’ loss against Mark Jones immaterial to the final outcome as Cornwall claimed the match 2-1 on the tie break.

Both Cornwall Teams will be in Semi Final action on Saturday when the Premier Team take on Shropshire and the A Team take on Suffolk.

INTER COUNTY

 

On Saturday (18 February)  Cornwall’s A Team travelled to Bristol to face Oxfordshire in the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition as they bid to retain the title won three times in the past 5 seasons.

 

Session One saw the points shared 4 apiece, Luke Jolly taking a 15-9 win in the Singles and Sheila & Robert Flower winning 14-12 in the Pairs. Cornwall took an advantage they would not relinquish in the second session with Marion & John Keers & Pam Williams winning 14-9 in the Triples and both Fours claiming wins, Bill Sharp, Jim Rule, Terry Bray & Peter Hamley 13-4 and Barbara James, Joe Dixon, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton 12-8.  At the halfway stage Cornwall led 10 points to 6 and 87 shots to 80.

 

Cornwall all but sealed victory in the third session with a further 3 wins, Luke Jolly 13-12 in the Singles, Sheila & Robert Flower 21-8 and Keith Williams & Betty Temple-Smith 20-7 in the Pairs where the strong scoring also secured the bonus points.  The final session saw Cornwall ensure victory with a further two wins, Marion & John Keers & Pam Williams 14-3 and Kath Goodman, Tony Jago & Keith Matthews 9-8 in the Triples together with the bonus points.  The fours bonus points were also secured with both rinks restricting defeat to 2 shots each.  The final score being Cornwall 26 points 184 shots Oxfordshire 14 points 149 shots.

 

This weekend will see the Premier Team in action in their Quarter Final match against Surrey, victory will see them join there A Team counterparts in the Semi Finals on Saturday 3 March, likely to be in Northampton.
