COUNTY SINGLES
Over the weekend (16 & 17 January) 56 bowlers played off at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin for the 8 places available at the County Finals in March. On both days play was organised on a round robin basis with 7 group winners and 1 runner up qualifying for the playoff round.
On Saturday Peter Hore (Holmans) was the only bowler on the day to win all three games to take the honours in Group One with 6 points +16 shots. Rob Stack (Treviscoe) claimed Group Two with 4 +6. Tony Baldwin (Liskeard) took Group Three with an unbeaten 5 +17. Marion Keers (St Agnes) was also unbeaten taking Group Four with 5 +14. Jean Roper (Dobwalls) claimed a tight Group Five with 4 +9. Also unbeaten was Joyce Ward (Withiel) with 5 +8 to take Group Six. Elise Daniell (Holmans) claimed Group Seven on shot difference with 4 +16. Carol Ford (St Newlyn East) completed the qualifiers claiming the best runners up spot with 4 +18.
The knockout stages saw Tony Baldwin defeat Robert Stack 10-8. Jean Roper claimed a 13-2 win over Carol Ford. Peter Hore defeated Elise Daniell 12-8 and Joyce Ward took the last finals spot with a 10-9 win over Marion Keers.
Sunday’s play saw a number of maximum scores in the group stages. Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) in Group One with 6 +28, David Studden (Troon) in Group Two with 6 +32, Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) in Group Four with 6 +13, Brian Wakeley (Luxulyan) in Group Five with 6 +14 and Ron Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) in Group Six with 6 +7. Also unbeaten was Phil Hicks (Luxulyan) with 5 +17 in Group Three. The final group winner was Jim Ashton (Saltash) in Group 7 with 4 +30. Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) completed the qualifiers claiming the best runners up spot with 4 +15.
The knockout stages saw Nigel Nicholls claim a comfortable 12-1 win over Jim Ashton. David Studden eased past Nicholas Truscott 13-4. Ron Thomas earned a hard fought 9-5 win over Phil Hicks with Graham Ford completing the qualifiers with a 11-9 win over Brian Wakeley.
The eight qualifiers with return to Bodmin on Saturday 13 March for the finals.
INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
On Sunday (24 January) Cornwall face Somerset in the re-arranged final match of the group stages of the ESMBA Inter County Championship.
In the Premier Team competition Devon have already secured top spot in the South West group with 159 points ahead of Dorset on 118 after the two met on Sunday (17 January) with Devon claiming a 23-17 win. To finish second and take a spot in the Main Knockout Competition Cornwall must score 34 of the 40 points on offer against Somerset. Third in the group will see Cornwall receive a bye into the Quarter Finals of the Consolation Knockout Competition.

The A Team competition remains finely balanced with Cornwall in a strong position. Devon, who have already completed their fixtures head the table with 123 points. Cornwall are 15 behind with Somerset just a single point behind. The team who claim the match win on Sunday will claim the South West group and a place in the Main Knockout Competition.

DEVON CHALLENGE
On Saturday (23 January) at team of 20 from Cornwall will travel to Winkleigh in Devon for the annual challenge match for bowlers who are not regular county players.

The recent wintery weather has played havoc with the area league fixtures with only a few matches played since the Christmas break.
