NEWS RELEASE 4th January 2009

ESMBA INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall’s County teams enjoyed mixed results in the final group games of the 2008/9 season on Sunday against Somerset at Wincanton.

The A Team completed the group stages with a with a strong performance claiming a 26 points 195 shots to 14 points 158 shots win. The first session saw the points shared with wins for Peter Spargo in the singles (16-4) and Carolyn Matthews & Pam Williams in the pairs (20-9). The second session saw both triples claiming wins, Robert Flower, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (12-7) and Pam Hamley, Jean Roper & Peter Hamley (14-8). At the halfway point in the match the score stood at Somerset 8 points 84 shots Cornwall 8 points 101 shots.

Cornwall took control of the match in the third session claiming 3 out of 4 games, with wins in the singles for Peter Spargo (17-6) and pairs for Carolyn Matthews & Pam Williams (16-10) and Joyce Ward & Miriam Barbery (12-10). Superior scoring saw Cornwall claim the bonus points in both disciplines. An equally dominant final session with a win in the triples for Bob Flower, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (9-8) and both fours Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks (10-6) and Sheila Hodge, Tony Jago, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton (12-9) saw Cornwall secure the match win. The triples also claimed the bonus points whilst the fours missed out by a shot. Cornwall finished the group stage of the competition on 124 points in third place to claim a place in the quarter finals of the Consolation competition.

The Premier Team suffered a dismal day claiming just 5 points, all in the morning session, to go down to a score line of Somerset 35 points 250 shots Cornwall 5 points 144 shots. Cornwall’s points were recorded by Nigel Nicholls in the singles (19-9), Gillian Cawrse and Percy Tripp in the pairs (12-10) and Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Carol & Graham Ford (8-8). Consolation for Cornwall was that the five points scored saw Cornwall finish above Dorset in the final table.

ESMBA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

A full days bowling is planned for Saturday (10th January) at Luxulyan Village Hall with a small group of bowlers contesting the qualification competitions for the ESMBA National Championships with one place on offer in each of the four disciplines, singles, pairs, triples and fours.
