County Four Wood Pairs
With the New Year celebrations barely over Cornwall's Short Mat Bowlers were back in action over the weekend at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club for the County Four Wood Pairs.  On Saturday 24 teams were drawn in 6 groups of 4 with group winners and 2 runners-up going forward to a knock-out round.

Blisland's Mike Webster & Henry Matthews topped Group One with 4 points +16 shots ahead of Neil Gribble (Landrake) & Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) on 4 +10 which earned them the second of the two runners-up spots.  Mark Payne (Newlyn Trinity) & Nigel Jelbert (Penlee) topped Group Two with 6 +21 with Wadebridge's Robin Burden & John Menhenick second on 2 -3.  Treviscoe's Sarah Grimshaw & Tony Jago took the top spot in Group Three with 6 +15, second placed Henry Kendall & Tony Liddicoat (Withiel) claimed the first of the runners-up spots with 4 +13.

Group Four winners were Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) & Gary Davey (Landrake) with 6 +27 ahead of Liskeard's Shelia Hodge & Tony Baldwin on 4 +7.  Dobwalls' Bill Sharp & Brenda Sleep topped Group Five with 6 +28 with Treviscoe's Carolyn & Jim Stanley second on 2 -8.  Group Six saw another Treviscoe pairing in top spot with Chris Fry and Tom Westlake on 6 +25 with Hayle's June Trestrail & Chris Harris second on 4 +9.

In the knock-out round G Cawrse defeated N Jelbert 12-5.  T Jago raced to a 9-0 lead against H Matthews and despite a comeback from the latter went on to win 10-6.  Scores of three on each of the first two ends set up G Davey for an 11-5 winn against T Westlake and in the final game T Liddicoat defeated B Sleep 9-6.

On Sunday 22 teams were drawn into 5 groups, 1 of six and 4 of four with group winners and 3 runners-ip going forward to a knock-out round.

Ladock's Sandra & John Worton topped Group One with 6 +37 ahead of Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland) & Ruth Newbury (Wadebridge) on 4 +11 who qualified as second runners-up. Holman's Elise Daniell & Peter Hore won Group Two with 5 +18 with Landrake's Dennis Shorthouse & Richard Kerr second on 4 + 12 to give them the top runners-up spot.  The weekends top score came in Group Three where David Balow (Marazion) & David Studden (Holmans) scored 6 +46 ahead of Ladock's Richard Brown & Graham Luke on 4 +1.

Illogan's Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher topped Group Four on 4 +15 ahead of Kath Goodman (Treviscoe) & Karen Watson (Saltash) on 4 +7 who took the final runners-up spot.  Newlyn Trinity's Mike Dyer & Nigel Nicholls took top spot in Group Five with 6 +24 ahead of Wadebridge's David Shaw & Paul Spencer on 4 +\- 0.

The draw for the knock-out round saw the three qualified runners-up face the pairings they had already met in the group stages.  P Hore came from 0-5 down against R Kerr to win 10-7.  In a game which saw the lead change hands four times and never more than two shots advantage either way D Studden defeated N Nicholls 8-6.  K Watson won 7 of the 9 ends against G Fisher to win 8-4 and the final game saw R Newbury defeat J Worton 9-6.

Swedish Masters
This weekend Peter Hore, Elise Daniell & Nigel Nicholls travel to Stromstad in Sweeden to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Swedish Masters.

Peter is drawn in Group Two where he will face Stephen Proctor & James Smith from England, Norway's Frode Coppered & Kai Aslak Holte and Sweden's Peter Cronstromin.  In Group Seven Nigel faces Sweden's Birgit Dahlgren, Ingvar Nelson, Eva Nelson & Ulf Hällstrand and Northern Ireland's Sam Moore.  Elise is drawn in Group Nine where Sweden's Jorgen Karlsson & Lillian Gjermo, Isle of Man's Michael Collister, Norway's Kjetil Grønseth and Belguim's Dimitri Payne provide the opposition.

Forthcoming Events
For the rest of January, with the exception of the final round of Inter Area League fixtures on the Sunday 17th January, English Association events take over the calendar.  On the 16th the ESMBA Open Fours will be contested with the winners earning a place in the England team at the forthcoming World Championships.  The following day the England squad have a practice day planned.  The following weekend regional qualifiers for the ESMBA/Torquay Leisure Hotels Top Club will be played.  On the 30th the Cornwall A Team have qualified to play will play the ICC Rinks finals in Daventry against Kent, West Sussex, Suffolk, Surrey, Somerset, North Yorkshire and Northampton.

Inter County Championship

Following Sunday's final group match in the South West area between Devon and Somerset the final placings and future fixtures are now known.

Cornwall's Premier Team have fallen short of qualification for the knock out competition by the narrowest margin after Devon narrowly defeated Somerset 22-18, giving Somerset a total of 73 points in second place, 1 ahead of Cornwall's 72 in third.  Devon finished well clear at the top with 95 points.

Cornwall's A Team will play in the Last 16 of the Knock Out competition after finishing second in the group following Somerset's 21-19 win against Devon on Sunday.  Cornwall's opponents on the weekend of 6th/7th February will be Cheshire with the venue to be confirmed.

Both teams also have the finals of the Inter County Rinks to look forward to with the A Team due to play 30th January and Premier Team on the 5th March although confirmation is still awaited from the ESMBA.

Forthcoming Competitions
The calendar for January gives most bowlers a break from week after week action as National and International events dominated the fixture list.

The only local competition will be the Four Wood Pairs on the New Years weekend at Carnmoggas with 29 pairs due to play on each day.

On the 9th & 10th three local bowlers will be making the trip to Sweden for the Short Mat Players Tour Swedish Open.

English Association events then take over the calendar for the rest of the month.The weekend on the 16th and 17th sees the ESMBA Open Fours contested on the Saturday and squad day on the Sunday whilst back in the County the final round of Inter Area League fixtures will be played.

On the 23rd and 24th the regional qualifiers for the ESMBA/Torquay Leisure Hotels Top Club will be played.  On the 30th the A Team will play the ICC Rinks finals.

Inter County Championship

On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Somerset for the final Inter County Round Robin matches of the season.

Team Manager Nigel Nicholls set the Premier Team the target of recording their first win of the season in a bid to secure second place in the group and progression to the main knock out competition later in the season.

The first session saw the points shared with Cornwall winning both Singles games, Nigel Nicholls 17-3 and Ed Dyer 14-9.  The second session saw Somerset take a five to three advantage, Cornwall's points scored in the Triples by John Worton, Tom Westlake & Kevin Williams with a 13-13 draw and in the Fours by Dennis Shorthouse, Nicholas Truscott, Neil Gribble & Peter Hore with a 10-4 win.  At the lunch break Somerset led 9 points to 7.

In the third session Cornwall brought themselves right back into contention picking up eight of the twelve points on offer.  In the Singles Nicholls and Dyer completed a whitewash with 10-9 and 13-8 wins respectively.  In the Pairs David Balow & David Studden won 10-16.  Cornwall led 15-13 going into the final session.

Cornwall sealed the match win in the final session again picking up eight of the twelve points on offer.  In the Triples Richard Brown, Martin Boraston & Gillian Cawrse won 21-10 and in the Fours Richard Kerr, Percy Tripp, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher won 19-3. Both margins of victory ensured Cornwall secured the bonus points in both disciplines to take the overall match win Cornwall 23 points Somerset 17 and 198 to 173 shots. 

The result leaves Cornwall on 72 points in second place in the table with Devon a point ahead on 73 and Somerset third on 55 due to play the final game this weekend coming at ISCA.  Cornwall must wait on the result of this match to know if they will qualify for the knock out stages.

The A Team match started with Cornwall taking six points from the first session with wins for Chris Roberts 12-10 in the Singles and both Pairs Graham Reeves & Keith Matthews 16-9 and Betty Temple-Smith & Max Burden 16-12.  The second session saw Somerset reply with a five to three session advantage.  Cornwall's points all in the Triples with Bill Sharp, Brenda Sleep & David Topliffe winning 11-6 and Ruth Newbury, Tony Jago & Gary Davey drawing 9-9.  Cornwall led 9-7 at the half way point.

Points were shared in the third session six apiece.  In the Singles Roberts won 15-14 and in the Pairs Temple-Smith & Burden won 12-10 with Cornwall taking the Pairs bonus points.  The final session saw Cornwall take five game points but no bonus points.  In the Triples Newbury, Jago & Davey won 10-9, in the Fours Kath Goodman, Sheila Hodge, Sandra Worton & Keith Williams drew 11-11 and Lynne Davey, Mike Webster, Graham Luke & Graham Ford won 17-7.  The final match score 20 points apiece and 188-171 shots in Somerset's favour.  Cornwall top the group table with 80 points, Somerset are on 63 and Devon 57 with Devon hosting Somerset this coming weekend.

National Qualifiers
On Saturday the remaining National Championship qualifiers were contested at Carnmoggas.  The Pairs was contested first with a round robin followed by a knock out competition.

In the Semi Finals Gary Davey & Martin Boraston defeated Gillian Cawrse & Nigel Nicholls 8-7 and Kevin Williams & Mike Dyer took a four on the last end to defeat Peter Hore & Karen Watson 9-7.

Davey & Boraston won a tight final 7-6 against Williams & Dyer with Hore & Watson winning the third place play off 13-1.

The Triples followed and was played to the same format.  In the Semi Finals Sandra Worton, John Worton & Chris Roberts defeated Mike Dyer, David Balow & Kevin Williams 12-3 and Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Peter Hore  won 12-3 against Dennis Shorthouse, Marton Boraston & Ed Dyer.

Daniell, Truscott & Hore won the final against Worton, Worton & Roberts 10-3 with Dyer, Balow & Williams taking third place with a 9-8 win over Shorthouse, Boraston & Dyer.
