NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Cornwall enjoyed a successful English Short Mat Bowling Association National Championships with runners up finishes in the Singles and Pairs on the opening two days.
 
On Thursday Peter Hore (Holmans) lost to Devon's Benny Bass in the final.  Peter came through the group stages as runner up in Group 3 winning two of his three games.  The first round of the knockout stages saw Peter defeat Devon's Graham James 8-7.  Surrey's Derek Johns was defeated 11-9 in the third round to set up a Quarter Final match against East Sussex's Andrew Beard which Peter won 11-4.  A 9-7 scoreline against Cheshire's Matty Worden saw Peter through to the final which Benny won 14-1.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) was unbeaten in the group stages and defeated Somerset's Andrew Cowlin 14-8 in the second round before losing 12-3 to Benny in the third round.

Friday saw Nigel Nicholls and James Smith (Newlyn Trinity) finish runners up losing in the final to Cheshire's Matty Worden & Paul Clegg.  The pair came through the group stages unbeaten with a +37 shot difference.  Round Two saw them ease past East Sussex pairing of Nigel Froud & John Loran 14-2.  Round Three opposition came from West Midland's Adam Easthope & Nathan Caines who were defeated 13-7.  

Moving into the Quarter Finals a 9-5 win against Hampshire's Stephen Buckett & Alistair Mccrea set up a Semi Final against Dorset's Alex Kley and Tom Perris where an extra end was needed to win a place in the final with a 10-9 scoreline.  In the final the Cheshire pairing gradually increased the lead as the match went on to eventually win 11-6.

On Saturday Nigel Nicholls joined Newlyn Trinity team mates John Thomas, Mike Dyer and Kevin Williams in the Fours.  They came through the group stages as runners up in Group 13 winning two out of three games.  In the second round they defeated Hampshire's Paul Goodman, Ben Cherry, Callum Goodman & Jason McLean 9-8.  In the third round they won 7-4 against Dorset's Paul Pomeroy, Emily Thomas, Ben Riley & Sam Harvey.  Their run came to an end in the Quarter Finals against another Dorset team, Christina Chant, Glen Harvey, Alex Kley & Thomas Perris losing 5-9.

On Sunday Cornwall has two teams in the Triples.  David Studden (Holmans) joined Nigel Nicholls & James Smith whilst Peter Hore teamed up with John Thomas & Mike Dyer.  Studden, Nicholls & Smith dominated Group One in the knockouts winning three game with +61 shots.  The second round saw them against Oxfordshire's Dave Watts, Lynn Orlando & Santo Orlando winning 10-5.  Their competition came to an end in the third round against East Sussex's David Hunt, Gavin Wood & Alec Martin losing 6-7.

Hore, Thomas & Dyer won their final game in Group Seven to top the group with two wins and -2 shots.  In the second round they met Dorset's Tony Wauklin, Thomas Perris & David Glennerster winning 8-4.  Their competition also ended in the third round against Norfolk's Steve Bridge, David Lamb & Gary Best losing 5-9.

Over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend a team from Cornwall will be among 16 taking part in the ESMBA/TLH Top Team event in Torquay to conclude the winter season.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day Two of the English National Short Mat Bowling Association National Championship saw the Cornwall pairing of Nigel Nicholls and James Smith finish runners up losing to Cheshire's Matty Worden & Paul Clegg.

Cornwall's Peter Hore was runner up in today's English Short Mat Bowling Association National Singles Championship losing to Devon's Benny Bass in the final.

Peter came through the group stages as runner up in Group 3 winning two of the three games.  The first round of the knockout stages saw Peter defeat Devon's Graham James  8-7.  Surrey's Derek Johns was defeated 11-9 in the third round to set up a Quarter Final match against East Sussex's Andrew Beard which Peter won 11-4.  A 9-7 scoreline against Cheshire's Matty Worden saw Peter through to the final which Benny won 14-1.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
Over the weekend three local bowlers, Elise Daniell (Holmans), Peter Hore (Holmans) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) travelled to Belfast to compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Open Pairs and World Masters Singles in Belfast.

On Friday afternoon the Belfast Open Pairs was contested.  Elise and Peter teamed up and came through the group stages to qualify for the Cup competition where they lost in the first round to Andrew Leckey & DJ Wilson 3-13.  Nigel paired with Cheshire based Stephen Proctor and also qualified for the Cup competition.  In the first round they defeated Rob Ferguson & Michael Doorey 8-7 before losing in the second round to PJ Gallagher & Ed Sawbridge 6-12.


Over the remainder of the weekend the World Masters Singles title was contested.  The competition was the biggest yet run by the SMPT with a full entry of 288 bowlers competing over 48 groups of 6 to find qualifiers for the Cup, Plate and Shield knockout competitions.

Elise claimed two wins and a draw in Group 17 to finish third and progress to the Plate competition where she faced Lee Toleman (ENG) in the second round (Last 64) losing 8-12.  Nigel won three games in Group 16 to also finish third and go into the Plate competition where he faced Chris Martin (WAL) in the second round losing 7-9.  Peter won two games in Group 26 finishing fifth in the group taking a place in the Shield competition where he faced Ivor Armstrong (IRE) in the second round losing 7-9.


Nigel finishes the SMPT season as the top ranked played from Cornwall in 4th place, Peter 37th and Elise just outside the Top 50 in 52nd.

The SMPT takes a break until the August Bank Holiday weekend when UK Open will be contested at Falcon Indoor Bowling Club, Chelmsford where 192 bowlers will compete for the title.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
This coming weekend attention turns to the National Governing Body, the English Short Mat Bowling Association's National Championships at Melton Mowbray Indoor Bowling Club.  Cornwall's representatives will be

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Over the weekend The National Mixed Fours and Over 55 Pairs were played at Daventry Indoor Bowling Club.

On Saturday Elise Daniell, Gillian Cawrse, Callum Beale & Peter Hore competed in the Mixed Fours.  One win the the group stages was enough to take them through to the Knockout stages where in the Last 16 they defeated Somerset's Carol Hawkins, Sue Smith, Barry Keirle & Keith Hawkins 12-1.  More South West opposition followed in the Quarter Finals where Devon's Richard Williams, Benny Bass, Marie Tolman & Pam Tolman prevailed 7-3.

On Sunday Howard McCormack & Mark Payne won all three group games to qualify for the knockout stages where they met Hertfordshire's Geoff Branch & Sam Salmon losing 8-10 in the last 32 round.

The remainder of the National Championship titles will be contested from Thursday 11th - Sunday 14th April with Cornwall represented in all disciplines.

BEBBINGTON CUP
On Sunday the Bebbington Cup was contested at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club between the Four area league winners.  Newlyn Trinity Jowsters (West), Withiel Oaks (Central), Lanteglos A (North) & Landrake (East).

After the three rounds of games the title was decided on the last game to finished between Withiel Oaks and Newlyn Trinity Jowsters with the Oaks winning both mats 11-10 and 12-10.  The full results were:
Session One: Withiel Oaks v Landrake 1-18 & 19-6; Newlyn Trinity Jowsters v Lanteglos A 12-7 & 17-4
Session Two: Withiel Oaks v Lanteglos A 15-2 & 12-7; Landrake v Newlyn Trinity Jowsters 4-17 & 6-17
Session Three: Withiel Oaks v Newlyn Trinity Jowsters 11-10 & 12-10; Landrake v Lanteglos A 10-8 & 5-11

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
Following the conclusion of the Bebbington Cup on Sunday 9 bowlers competed in the County Champion of Champions at Carnmoggas.

Played to a straight knockout format Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) defeated Gary Skinner (Saltash) 12-6 in the Preliminary Round.  The Quarter Finals saw Paul Murphy (Porthleven) defeat Tripp 12-8.  Peter Hore (Holmans) defeated Geoff Risdon (Lanteglos) 10-5.  Caroline Moore (Luxulyan) won 11-9 against Callum Beale (Withiel) and Bob Banks (Boscastle) won 11-10 against David Shaw (Wadebridge).

In the Semi finals Hore defeated Murphy 15-0 and Banks won 11-7 against Moore.  The final was decided by an extra end with Hor defeating Banks 11-10.

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR
This weekend three local bowlers, Elise Daniell (Holmans), Peter Hore (Holmans) and Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) will compete in the Short Mat Players Tour Open Pairs and World Masters Singles in Belfast.

On Friday the Pairs will see Elise and Peter team up whilst Nigel pairs with Cheshire based Stephen Proctor.  Over the remainder of the weekend they will be playing for individual honours in a field of 288 bowlers.  

The SMPT World Rankings are based on a rolling 12 event basis.  Nigel goes into the Singles event in a net second place in the Rankings on 787.63 points, 17.5 behind leader Jonathan Payne (BEL).  James Trott (ENG) is third on 767.13, Ed Sawbridge (ENG) is fourth on 760 and Stephen Gale (IOM) fifth on 756.75.  Peter has 407.75 points and Elise 316.63 points.

In the season Order of Merit table Nigel sits in eighth place with 449 points, 92 behind leader Ed Sawbridge.  Peter is 26th with 295.50 points and Elise is 43rd with 236.25 points.
