NEWS RELEASE - 8th May 2024

SHORT MAT PLAYERS TOUR

Three local bowlers recently travelled to Belfast to compete in the season concluding Short Mat Players Tour World Masters event over the weekend of 20th and 21st April.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) enjoyed mixed results in the group stages starting with a 5-9 loss to Rory Gittoes followed by a 14-3 win against Peter Roberts.  A second win on Saturday came against Kerrie Hall 16-5 before finishing the day with a narrow 9-11 loss against Shaun Amerin.  Saturday's results left Nigel needing to win his final group game on Sunday morning to qualify for the opportunity to score big ranking points in the Cup competition.  Nigel won that final group game against Sean Trainor 11-6 to finish second in the group and take a place in the Cup Competition.

Nigel won 14-6 in the last 64 round against Bobby Logan before taking a 10-4 win against Michael Doorey in the last 32 round.  The last 16 saw Nigel lose to Alex Kley 2-10 with Alex going on to take the title.  The weekend's results saw Nigel move up 2 places to 3rd in the World Rankings with 838.25 points and 2 places to 2nd in the season Order of Merit standings with 600 points. Nigel qualifies to represent England in the World Cup event to be played in Chelmsford at the end of August.

Peter Hore (Holmans) also enjoyed mixed results starting with a 10-6 win against Louis O' Hara followed by losses to Noel Smyth 3-11 and Mark Spalding 9-11.  Peter rounded off Saturday with an 11-6 win against Chris O' Kane.  On Sunday morning a 6-6 draw in his final group game against Tony McHugh left Peter 4th in the group and into the Plate competition.  Peter lost 1-11 to Paul Cairnduff in the last 64 round to finish the season ranked 43rd on the tour rankings with 385.38 points and 34th in the Order of Merit standings with 300.50 points.

Elise Daniell (Holmans) failed to score a point in the group stages with five losses, 6-15 to Ian McElroy, 6-8 to Declan Hegarty, 5-15 to Darren Davies, 7-12 to Lorraine Shorney and 5-12 to Shaun Morley.  A win 9-7 in the last 64 against Jonathan Ritchie in the Shield Competition ensured that Elise came away from the weekend with some ranking points.  Her weekend ended in the last 32 against Stephen O'Neill with a 3-12 loss.  Elise ended the season ranked 33rd on the tour rankings with 439.38 points and 29th in the Order of Merit standings with 335 points.

The Short Mat Players Tour's next ranking event is over the weekend of 24th and 25th August with a number of local bowlers entered into the event in Chelmsford.
