News Release - 14 January 2018

Short Mat Players Tour British Open
Newlyn Trinity's Nigel Nicholls won his first Short Mat Players Tour (SMPT) title on Sunday, the British Open at the York & District Indoor Bowls Club, defeating Dom Read (Essex) 9-7 in a well contested final broadcast live to an internet audience.

To reach the final Nigel came through the group stages second in Group 6 with four wins from five games.  In the last 64 Nigel faced Bill Burn (ENG) winning 15-4.  The last 32 saw a comfortable 15-2 win over Stephen Gale (IOM).  In the last 16 Nigel defeated Steve Puttock (ENG) 12-6 and in the Quarter Finals Mitchell Young (ENG) was defeated by the same scoreline.  In the Semi Finals Nigel won 14-5 against Tony Ealham (ENG).

Nigel's victory moves him into top spot in this season's Order of Merit rankings and into the top 10 of the World Rankings for the first time.

Karen Watson (Saltash) reached the Last 32 of the Cup Competition on her SMPT debut after coming through Group 9 in second place after three wins, a draw and a loss.  In the knockouts she defeated Steve Killington (ENG) 12-6 in the last 64 and Gary Stewart (SCO) 10-6 in the last 32.  She was defeated 9-12 by Daniel Sands (ENG) in the Last 16.

Peter Hore came through Group 15 in second place with three wins to take a place in the Cup Competition where he lost 9-11 to Martin Harries (WAL) in the Last 64.

Three wins in Group 16 was enough to see Callum Beale (Withiel) through to the Cup competition where he lost to the Current Number 1 Stephen Proctor (ENG) 9-12 in the last 64.

Elise Daniell (Holmans) qualified for the Plate Competition by finishing third in Group 6 with three wins.  A 13-6 win over Nick Wyatt (ENG) in the Last 64 was followed by a 17-5 win over David White (ENG) in the Last 32.  The Last 16 saw a 12-11 win over Stuart Hiddleston (SCO), Elise's run in the competition came to an end in the Quarter Finals win a 5-16 loss to Andrew Jones (WAL).

Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) was one of four bowlers in a tight Group 16 to win two games but placed bottom with progression into the Shield competition where a Last 64 defeat to Christine Holland (IOM) 10-11 ended his participation in the event.  Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake) failed to pickup a point in Group 10 and was defeated 6-17 by Mark McHugh (ENG) in the Last 64 of the Shield competition.

England Weekend
Cornwall's England Squad members have a final chance to try and claim a place in March's World Championships in Sweden with the Open Singles on Saturday and final squad day before the team is picked on Sunday.

Inter Area League
In the County the final round of Inter Area League matches are played on Sunday with all four areas still in with a chance of winning.  North face East and Central face West at Carnmoggas.

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall travelled to Dorset to face Dorset in the final ESMBA Inter County Championship match of the group game of the season at the Dorset Bowls Resort, Bere Regis.

Needing 11 points to secure top spot in the group and a likely bye into the Quarter Finals of the knockout stages, Cornwall's Premier Team scored just that.

The first session saw Cornwall only score two points, a win in the Pairs for Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse 13-11.  The second session saw points shared with Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams winning 15-10 in the Triples and Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Nicholas Truscott & Luke Jolly winning 16-10 in the Fours.  Dorset led the match 10-6 at the halfway point.

In the afternoon Cornwall scored three points in the Singles and Pairs, Nigel Nicholls drawing 9-9 in the Singles and David Balow & David Studden winning 16-14 in the Pairs.  Cornwall went into the last session of the match trailing 9-19 and still needing two points to secure top spot in the group.  It was the Four of Ray Jeffery, Elise Daniell, Percy Tripp & Callum Beale who secured the required points winning 11-6 in the Fours.  Dorset won the match 29 points to 11 and 208 shots to 166.

Cornwall's A Team shared the first session with wins for Dennis Shorthouse in the Singles 15-12 and Glynn Roy & Alan Holden 16-10.  The second session was again shared with wins for Sheila Hodge, Mike Webster & David Topliffe 12-11 in the Triples Meg Horrell, Nathan Waters, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell 10-7 in the Fours.  The match was tied 8-8 at the halfway point.
 
The third session saw Dorset seize the initiative in the match taking seven of the eight game points and the bonus points for Singles and Pairs.  Cornwall's only point of the session scored by Shorthouse with a 10-10 draw.  The final session saw Cornwall win on three mats, in the Triples Topliffe won 14-11 and Heidi Kerr, Betty Temple-Smith & Tony Jago 17-12.  In the Fours Rose Dyer, Dianne Shorthouse, Lynne Davey & Gary Davey won 11-9.  Dorset took the bonus points in both disciplines.  The final match score Dorset 25 points 207 shots Cornwall 15 points 167 shots.

Pairs:- Glynn Roy (Withiel) & Alan Holden (Landrake) 16-10 & 8-16 and Des Pengelly (Landrake) & Sandra Worton (St Newlyn East) 4-20 & 14-16.
Triples:- Sheila Hodge (Liskeard), Mike Webster (Blisland) & David Topliffe (Boscastle)  12-11 & 14-11 and Heidi Kerr (Landrake), Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland), Tony Jago (Ladock) 6-16 & 17-12.
Fours:- Meg Horrell (Withiel), Nathan Waters (Blisland), Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) & Ken Horrell (Withiel) 10-7 & 5-15 and Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), Dianne Shorthouse (Landrake), Lynne Davey (Landrake) & Gary Davey (Landrake) 8-9 & 11-9.

County Fours
On Saturday 18 teams competed in the qualifying competition for the County Fours at Carnmoggas.

Drawn into four groups the top two teams from each group progress to the finals.

In Group One Elise Daniell (Holmans), Nicholas Truscott (Holmans), Callum Beale (Withiel) & Peter Hore (Holmans) topped the group with 6 points +12 shots, Robert Rawlings, Lynette Golledge, Brenda Sleep & John Worth (Dobwalls) took second with 4 +12.  Lynn Smith, Paul Murphy, Bob Smith (Porthleven) & Frank Plummer topped Group Two with 6 +12 with  Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), Gill Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Lynne & Gary Davey (Landrake) second on 4 +9.

Group Three was topped by Heidi & Richard Kerr and Dianne & Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) with 4 +2 with Keith Williams, Mike Richards, David & Beryl Langsworthy (Penlee) second with 4 +/-0.  In the final group Howard McCormack, Nigel Jelbert (Penlee), Malcolm Daniels (Hayle) & Mark Payne (Penlee) topped the group with 4 +13 with  Betty Temple-Smith, Mike Webster, Max Burden & Keith Matthews (Blisland) second on 4 +10.

Short Mat Players Tour British Open
This coming weekend a number of local bowlers will be travelling to York to compete in the latest Short Mat Players Tour event, the British Open.

Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) goes into the tournament looking to build on his current 4th place in the Order of Merit and is drawn in Group 6 where he will face fellow local bowler Elise Daniell (Holmans) along with Angela Roberts (ENG), Mike Clancy (ENG), Jack Pye (ENG) & Gunnar Frantzen (DEN).  Nigel's first game at 09.00 on Saturday has been scheduled for the show mat with live scoring on the SMPT website and possible live video via the Facebook live.

Peter Hore (Holmans) faces a tough draw in Group 15 where he faces Dom Reed (ENG), Chris Hopkins (ENG), Peter Roberts (ENG), Mike Jones (ENG) & Martin Grange (ENG).  Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) & Callum Beale (Withiel) are drawn to face each other in Group 16 where they are joined by Chris Coates (ENG), Tony Ealham (ENG), Bent Nielsen (DEN) & Steven Durcan (IoM).

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association

Cornwall's Short Mat Bowlers will be straight back into competitive action on the first weekend of January with 18 teams taking part in the County Fours on Saturday 6th and the County Premier and A Teams travelling to Dorset on Sunday 7th for the final group match of the season.

Cornwall's Premier Team need a minimum of 11 points from the 40 available to take top spot in the group and hopefully avoid a preliminary round match in the knockout stages as they look to at least match last years acheivement of reaching the final.  26 points for Cornwall's A Team will see them overhaul Dorset for 3rd place.

The following weekend a number of local bowlers will be travelling to York to compete in the latest Short Mat Players Tour event, the British Open.

In the West Area Newlynn Trinity Jowsters lead the way with a 10 point gap over Holmans who in turn have a further 10 point gap ahead of Porthleven Fisherfolk.  Withiel Oaks are 8 points ahead of Truro City Golds in the Central area with Ladock Chiefs and Ladock Braves a further 2 points behind.  Dobwalls lead the East Area by a point from Landrake and Saltash Whites.  Blisland lead the way in the North with a 5 point lead over Boscastle, Lanteglos Reds and Wadebridge A.
