NCornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 12 November 2017

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall faced Dorset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club.

Cornwall came through a tight first session of the Premier Team match with three wins out of four in the first session.  Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore winning 15-12 and 15-14 respectively in the Singles and Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse winning 14-9 in the Pairs.  The second session saw Dorset take clean sweep in the Triples and Fours to lead 10-6 at the lunch break.

Cornwall turned the match around during the afternoon sessions going unbeaten winning seven and drawing one game.  The third session saw Nicholls win 13-11 and Hore draw 11-11 in the Singles.  In the Pairs David Balow & David Studden won 14-8 and Boraston & Cawrse won 15-7.  Cornwall took the bonus points in both disciplines to take 11 out of 12 points from the session to lead 17-11.

The final session saw Cornwall win all four mats but miss out on the both the Triples & Fours bonus points.  In the Triples John Worton, Keith Williams & Chris Roberts won 12-11 and Bob Banks, Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams won 13-10.  In the Fours Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Nicholas Truscott & Luke Jolly won 16-12 and Elise Daniell, Ray Jeffery, Percy Tripp & Callum Beale won 11-8.  The final match result Cornwall 25 points 195 shots Dorset 15 points 183 shots.  In the other match in the group Somerset defeated Devon 23-17.  Somerset lead the group on 103 points from 5 matches, Cornwall move into second on 91 from 4, Devon third on 86 from 5 and Dorset fourth on 80 from 4.

Singles:- Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) 15-12 & 13-11 and Peter Hore (Holmans) 15-14 & 11-11.
Pairs:- David Balow (Marazion) & David Studden (Holmans) 9-10 & 14-8 and Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) & Gill Cawrse (Lostwithiel) 14-9 & 15-7.
Triples:- John Worton (St Newlyn East), Keith Williams (Penlee) & Chris Roberts (Ladock) 12-16 & 12-11 and Bob Banks (Boscastle), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) 11-12 & 13-10.
Fours:- Graham Reeves (Saltash), Richard Kerr (Landrake), Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) & Luke Jolly (Withiel) 7-14 & 16-12 and Elise Daniell (Holmans), Ray Jeffery (Newlyn Trinity), Percy Tripp (Newlyn Trinity) & Callum Beale (Withiel) 7-18 & 11-8.

Cornwall's A Team have suffered a difficult season so far with only 32 points to show from the first three matches of the season.

The first session saw Dorset take the upper hand with only Ronnie Thomas scoring for Cornwall with an 18-9 win in the singles.  The second session saw Cornwall recover to level the match score at 8-8 at the lunch break.  For Cornwall Betty Temple-Smith, Mike Webster & Keith Matthews won 11-10 in the Triples and in the Fours Meg Horrell, Nathan Waters, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell won 10-9 and Rose Dyer, John Dodd, Lynne Davey & Gary Davey won 12-4.

The afternoon Singles and Pairs saw points shared.  In the Singles Thomas won 10-8 and Cornwall secured the bonus points.  In the Pairs Glynn Roy & Alan Holden won 16-11 but Dorset took the bonus points to leave the match tied 14 apiece going into the last session.  Cornwall took eight points from the final session to secure the match win.  In the Triples Heidi Kerr, Graham Ford & Brian Wakeley won 12-10 but Dorset took the bonus points.  In the Fours Horrell won 10-8 and Davey won 10-6 also securing the bonus points.  The final match score Cornwall 22 points 176 shots Dorset 18 points 191 shots.  The days other match saw Somerset defeat Devon 25-15.  Somerset lead the way on 125 points from 5 games, Devon sit second on 113 from 5, Dorset are third on 69 from 4 and Cornwall are fourth on 54 from 4.

Cornwall are back in action on the 26th November when Devon are the visitors to Carnmoggas whilst Dorset host Somerset on the same day.  Cornwall and Dorset will then complete there fixtures on 7th January when they face each other at the Dorset Bowls Resort.

National Championship Qualifiers
On Saturday the first of two days of National Championship Qualifiers were played at Carnmoggas.

The top three in each discipline were

Pairs 1st Gary Davey (Landrake) & Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), 2nd Elise Daniell (Holmans) & Luke Jolly (Withiel), 3rd Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Mark Payne (Penlee).

Triples 1st Kevin Williams (Porthleven), Mike Dyer & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity), 2nd Elise Daniell, Luke Jolly & Callum Beale (Withiel), 3rd Martin Boraston, Gill Cawrse (Lostwithiel) & Gary Davey

Over 55 Pairs 1st John Worton (St Newlyn East) & Chris Roberts, 2nd Mike Dyer & Kevin Williams, 3rd Mark Payne & Nigel Nicholls

British Isles Championships
The British Isles Championships take place this weekend in Ireland.  James Smith (Lostwithiel) is the sole locally registered bowler in the England Premier team lining up with Oxfordshire's Gareth Davies and West Midlands Alan Jones & Chris Willies in the Team competition.

The remainder of Cornwall's England squad members will play in the A team championships.  David Studden (Holmans) defends the Pairs title won 12 months ago with a new partner, West Midland's Phil Warr.  Elise Daniell (Holmans) and Luke Jolly (Withiel) are teamed with Gloucestershire's Vincent Dornan in the Triples.  Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) plays in the Fours with Essex's Anthony Fautley, West Sussex's Richard Jeffery and Hampshire's Nadine Bailey.  Peter Hore (Holmans) is the only local bowler in the team competition playing with Dorset's Sam Harvey & Alex Kley and Gloucestershire's Ollie Hipkiss.

Inter Area League
On Sunday Carnmoggas hosts the second round of Inter Area League fixtures with North against West and Central against East.

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association
News Release - 5 November 2017

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall face Dorset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club in a match that will go some way to determining the final outcome of the South West group in the Premier competition.  Cornwall currently lie in third place in the group at the moment on 66 points but have a game in hand over 2nd place Devon on 69 and leaders Somerset on 80 points.

Cornwall's A Team are languishing at the bottom of the table on 32 points from three games so far this season and will be looking for a much improved second half of the season.

County Triples
Last Sunday 23 teams competed in the County Triples at Carnmoggas with 8 teams going forward to the finals.  The teams were split into five groups with the group winners and three best runners up going through.

From Group One Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel), Mike Dyer (Newlyn Trinity) & Kevin Williams (Porthleven) were unbeaten with 6 points +22 shots.  Brian Wakeley, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (Ladock) claimed a finals spot finishing second on 4 +15.  Group Two was topped by Rose Dyer (Newlyn Trinity), Howard McCormack & Mark Payne (Penlee) with 5 +13, also qualifying were Bob Banks, John Wakelin & David Topliffe (Boscastle) 4 +16. 

Group Three was topped by Martin Boraston (East Taphouse), Lynne Davey & Gary Davey (Landrake) on 6 +21.  Eileen Taylor, Robert Rawlings & Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) claimed the final runners up spot with 4 +11.  Group Four was topped by Val Risdon, Neil Wright & Geoff Risdon (Lantegos) on 6 +24 and Group Five was headed by Ray Jeffery (Newlyn Trinity), David Balow (Marazion) & Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) on 6 +24.

The qualifiers will return Carnmoggas in March to play for the County title.

ESMBA Open Triples
On Saturday 28 October a number of local bowlers competed in the ESMBA Open Triples.

Peter Hore (Holmans) and Karen Watson (Saltash) teamed up with Anthony Fautley from Essex to win the Plate competition beating fellow local bowlers Luke Jolly (Withiel), David Studden (Holmans) & Glynn Roy (Withiel) in the final.

Elise Daniell (Holmans), playing with Norfolk's Nicky Bartlett & Gloucestershire's Jake Attrill reached the last eight of the main competition. Callum Beale (Withiel), playing with Gloucestershire's Tom Clough and Vincent Dornan won their group but bowed out of the competition at the last 16 stage.  Gillian Cawrse (Lostwithiel) played in a mixed team and didn't win a game in the group stages.  James Smith (Lostwithiel) played with Devon's Thomas Perris & Paul Pomoroy finishing third in group. 

British Isles Championships

Short Mat Players Tour Norwegian Open
Over the weekend of 28th & 29th October Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) travelled to Norway for the SMPT Norwegian Open competition.

Nigel came through the group stages comfortably winning 4 out of 5 games to finish second.

In the Cup Knockout Nigel came through the round of 32 with a 12-8 win against Mike Shaw (ENG).  In the round of 16 Nigel won 14-8 against John Lax (ENG) in a match that was broadcast live from the tournament on Facebook. In the Quarter Finals Nigel faced Jonathan Payne (Bel) losing 11-8.  The results saw Nigel move up the seasons Order of Merit rankings to fourth place on 299 points, 41 behind top placed Stephen Proctor who won the tournament.  In the Rankings Nigel moved up 2 places to 17th on 573 points. 

The next SMPT Singles competition is in York over the weekend of 13th & 14th January with a number of local bowlers expected to make the journey.

National Qualifers
The first of the National Championship qualification events takes place on Saturday when the Pairs and Triples will be played at Carnmoggas.

Cornwall County Short Mat Bowling Association

Inter County Championship
On Sunday Cornwall faced Somerset in the ESMBA Inter County Championship at Carnmoggas Indoor Bowling Club, the counties first home match of the season.

Cornwall started the Premier Team match well with three wins out of four in the first session.  Nigel Nicholls and Peter Hore winning 17-12 and 18-6 respectively in the Singles and John Worton & Dave Studden winning 11-10 in the Pairs.  The second session saw points shared with Somerset taking the Triples and Cornwall the Fours.  Graham Reeves, Richard Kerr, Karen Watson & Luke Jolly winning 9-8 and Elise Daniell, Ray Jeffery, Percy Tripp & Callum Beale winning 15-10.  Cornwall led 10-6 at the half way point in the match.

A strong third session put the match result beyond doubt with Cornwall taking three wins and a draw.  In the Singles Nicholls won 20-7 and Hore drew 10-10.  Worton & Studden and Martin Boraston & Gill Cawrse won 13-12 and 17-9 respectively.  Cornwall took the bonus points from both disciplines to lead 21-7 with a session to go.  The final session saw Somerset playing for pride and they did just that taking 9 of the 12 points on offer. For Cornwall Bob Banks, Dennis Shorthouse & Mike Dyer drew 10-10 in the Triples and Beale's Four won 17-12.  Cornwall fell short for the bonus points in both disciplines.  The final match result Cornwall 24 points 191 shots Somerset 16 points 188 shots.  The days other match in the group saw Devon & Dorset draw 20-20.

Cornwall's A Team's difficult season continued with a heavy defeat at the hands of Somerset by 8 points to 32 and 147 shots to 243.  In the first session Cornwall scored a single point in the Singles with Ronnie Thomas drawing 11-11.  The second session saw a win for Heidi Kerr, Betty Temple Smith & Keith Matthews in the Triples 16-9.  

The afternoon saw Thomas again draw, this time 13-13, in the Singles and Glynn Roy & Alan Holden win 17-12 in the Pairs.  The final session saw Meg Horrell, Graham Ford, Brenda Sleep & Ken Horrell win 10-9.  The other game in the group saw Devon win 24 points to 16 at home to Dorset.

Singles:- Mike Webster (Blisland) 6-23 & 8-18 and Ronnie Thomas (Newlyn Trinity) 11-11 & 13-13.

Cornwall are next in action on Sunday 12th November when they host Dorset at Carnmoggas.

County 2 Wood Singles
On Saturday 37 bowlers took part in the County Two Wood Singles at Carnmoggas split into two sessions of play.  In the morning 17 players were drawn in 4 groups with the group winners straight through to finals day.

Keith Matthews (Blisland) beat Luke Jolly (Withiel) 12-11 in the last game to top Group One on 6 points +16 shots.  Jolly & Callum Beale (Withiel) both finished on 4 +12.   In Group Two Karen Watson (Saltash) came from behind with two maximum scores on the last two ends to beat Elise Daniell (Holmans) 11-10 and top the group with 6 +26, Daniell finished second with 4 +12.

Kevin Williams (Porthleven) and Mike Webster (Blisland) drew the final game in Group Three which saw Williams go through with 5 +19 just ahead of Webster's 5 +16.  Richard Kerr (Landrake) topped Group Four with 5 +7 ahead of John Worton (St Newlyn East) 4 +17.

The afternoon saw 20 players drawn into 5 groups with the group winners and three best runners up going into a knockout round.

Betty Temple-Smith (Blisland) topped Group One with 6 +16 ahead of Nathan Waters (Withiel) on 3 -5.  Dennis Shorthouse (Landrake) topped Group Two 6 +11 ahead of Martin Boraston (East Taphouse) on 4 +12.  Group Three was topped by Brenda Sleep (Dobwalls) with 5 +18 ahead of Bob Smith (Porthleven) on 4 +3.

Howard McCormack (Penlee) topped Group Four 6 +11 after winning the deciding game 12-7 leaving Peter Hore (Holmans) second with 4 -2.  Graham Reeves (Saltash) topped Group Five with 6 +28 ahead of David Topliffe (Bscastle) on 4 +18.  The knockout round saw McCormack defeat Topliffe 13-10.  Sleep won 12-8 against Smith.  Reeves defeated Shorthouse 11-9 and Boraston took the final place at finals day with a 13-6 win against Temple-Smith.

This weekend a number of local bowlers travel to the Midlands to take part in the ESMBA Open Triples.  Nigel Nicholls has a longer journey for his weekend's competition as he makes the trip to Norway for the latest Short Mat Players Tour event in Skein where he will be looking to further consolidate his claim for a place in next August's SMPT World Cup event.  Nigel is drawn in Group 14
