NEWS RELEASE 15 January 2012

 

COUNTY FOUR WOOD PAIRS

 

Over the weekend 44 pairings competed at Fowey Community Leisure Centre for the 8 places available in the finals of the County Four Wood Pairs championships to be played on 10 March 2012.

 

Saturday’s action saw 23 pairs split into 5 groups.  Barbara James & Miriam Barbary (Dobwalls) claimed Group One with 5 points +11 shots.  Joyce & Norman Ward (Withiel) took Group Two with 6 +15 with Betty Temple-Smith & Phil Hicks (Luxulyan) claiming a runners up spot with 4 +19.  Gary Davey & Martin Boraston (Liskeard) were Group Three winners with 4 +19, Sheila & Robert Flower (Tintagel) also progressed from the same group with 4 +8.  Graham Reeves & Margaret Goodwin (Saltash) took Group Four with 6 +14.  Group Five saw three teams finish on four points with Brenda Sleep & Max Burden (Dobwalls) taking the group win with 4 +12 and Elise Daniell & Peter Hore (Holmans) claiming the final runners up spot with 4 +7.

 

The play offs saw Elise Daniell & Peter Hore defeat Sheila & Robert Flower 8-5.  Gary Davey & Martin Boraston were 12-7 winners against Joyce & Norman Ward.  Betty Temple-Smith & Phil Hicks claimed a 18-3 win against Brenda Sleep & Max Burden.  Barbara James & Miriam Barbery edged out Graham Reeves & Margaret Goodwin 9-8.

 

On Sunday 21 pairs competed again in 5 groups.  Nigel Nicholls (Newlyn Trinity) & Percy Tripp (Helston) claimed Group One with 6 +11.  Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) & Gillian Cawrse (Withiel) took Group Two with 6 +14 with Malcolm Nankervis & Frederick Spurr (Centenary) claiming a runners up spot with 4 +5.  Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts (Ladock) were Group Three winners with 6 +12, Meg & Ken Horrell (Withiel) also progressed from the same group with 4 +18.  Bill Sharp & Dave Griffin (Dobwalls) took Group Four with 6 +31.  Carol & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) were Group Five winners with 6 +37 shots and Trish Hodge & Val Smith (St Tudy ) claimed the final runners up spot with 4 +18.

 

In the play offs Nicholas Truscott & Gillian Cawrse defeated Carol & Graham Ford 11-3.  Patsy Wakeley & Chris Roberts came from 7-0 down to defeat Malcolm Nankervis & Frederick Spurr 14-10.  Nigel Nicholls & Percy Tripp were 22-2 winners against Trish Hodge & Val Smith and in the final game Bill Sharp & Dave Griffin defeated Meg & Ken Horrell 12-3.

 

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Following the final group match between Somerset and Dorset on Sunday, Cornwall draw’s in the Knockout stages of the Inter County Championship are now known.

 

The Premier Team will benefit from finishing third in the South West group by gaining a bye to the Quarter Finals of the Consolation Competition on the weekend of 25^th & 26^th February where either Surrey or London will be the opponents.  The A Team, who will be defending the Consolation title, start there knockout campaign with a Preliminary Round match against Warwickshire in the weekend of 4^th & 5^th February.  The venues for both games have yet to be confirmed.

 

INTER AREA LEAGUE

 

On Sunday (22 January) the final round of Inter Area League matches will be played at Fowey Community Leisure Centre. Top Two West (58 points) and Central (54) meet in the competition decider with East (36) facing North (12).

COUNTY MIXED FOURS

 

On Saturday (7 January) 20 teams competed in the qualification competition for the County Mixed Fours championship at Fowey Community Leisure Centre.  The 20 teams were split into 5 groups of four playing a round robin with the 5 group winners and three best runners up claim spots in the finals to be played on 29 January.

 

Rosemary Curnow, Patsy Wakeley, Chris Roberts and Brian Wakeley (Ladock) claimed Group One with 4 points -2 shots.  Group Two saw Joyce Ward (Withiel), Pam Hamley, Terry Bray & Peter Hamley (Lostwithiel) unbeaten with 6 +21.  From the same group Leah Sherman, Richard Brown, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher (Illogan) claimed a runners-up spot with 4 +13.  In Group Three Margaret Goodwin, Melba Kitt, Graham Reeves & Darren Woolner (Saltash) were also unbeaten with 6 +28.

 

Marion Keers, John Keers, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (St Newlyn East) claimed Group Four with 4 +28.  Margaret Shillaber, Ron Shillaber (Lanteglos), Sheila Flower & Robert Flower (Tintagel) also qualified as runners up with 4 +4.  The final group winners were Barbara James (Dobwalls), Marilyn Stewart, Arthur Hambley & Henry Kendall (Withiel) with 4 +6 to top Group Five.  John Turner, Edna Cope, Chris Cope and Margaret Turner (Liskeard) completed the qualifiers with 4 +5 from the same group.

 

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

On Sunday Cornwall travelled to the Dorset Bowls Resort near Bere Regis to face Dorset in the final group match of the season.

 

Cornwall’s Premier Team were defeated 28 points and 187 shots to 12 points and 154 shots.  Cornwall scored three points in the first session with a win for Richard Brown & David Studden (14-13) and draw for Margaret Jenkin & Nigel Nicholls (11-11) in the Pairs.  The second session saw Cornwall again score three out of a possible eight points, all recorded in the Fours.  Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott, Linda Martin & Gerald Fisher winning 7-5 and Bill Sharp, Max Burden, Brenda Sleep & Chris Roberts drawing 10-10.  Cornwall recorded a solitary win in the third session thanks to Peter Hore (19-5), a large enough margin to also secure the shots bonus points also.  Cornwall again only managed a single win in the final session, this time in the Triples for Graham Ford, Pam Williams and Ken Horrell (14-9).

The A Team suffered the worst possible start to the match dropping all for games in the first session of Singles and Pairs.  Cornwall claimed a single win in the second session with a win for Pam Hamley, Jim Rule, Terry Bray and Peter Hamley 13-3 in the Fours.  Martin Boraston doubled Cornwall’s points tally in the third session with an 18-10 win in the Singles.  The final session proved to be Cornwall’s best of the day claiming two games, Kath Goodman, Henry Kendall and Mike Widger (12-11) in the Triples and Peter Hamley’s Four completing a double winning 9-6 also securing the bonus points for the Fours.  The final score Dorset 30 points 195 shots, Cornwall 10 points 144 shots.
