ESMBA INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Cornwall’s Premier Team travelled to Bristol on Saturday to face Hampshire in the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation competition.

 

The first session seemed to set the stage for  close contest with Hampshire claiming a small 5-3 points advantage and just 3 shots separating the two counties.  Cornwall’s points recorded by Peter Hore in the Singles (14-10) and Joe Coups & David Studden’s (11-11) in the Pairs.

 

The second session looked to be equally close until a couple of substantial scores, a 5 in one of the Triples and a 7 in one of the Fours tipped the balance of power firmly towards Hampshire as they completed an 8-0 session victory to move firmly into the lead of the match 13 points to 3.

 

The afternoon Singles and Pairs saw a repeat of the morning score line of 5-3 in Hampshire’s favour.  Cornwall Points recorded by Nigel Nicholls recording a draw in Singles (11-11) and Gillian Cawrse and Percy Tripp winning in the Pairs (15-12).  Cornwall earned a bonus point from the Singles with the final shots count reading 46 apiece reflecting the close nature of the four games.  Hampshire claimed the points for the pairs to hold a match winning lead of 21 points to 7 going into the last session.

 

The final session again saw Hampshire take a clean sweep the Triples and Fours games to complete a dominant 33 points to 7 and 194 shots to 133 win.

This Saturday Cornwall’s A team face the long trip to Bedford to take on Oxfordshire in the Semi Finals of their respective Consolation competition.  Encouraged by their 26-14 win over Essex in the previous round Cornwall will be looking to replicate that form and book a place in the final of the competition which they have won twice in recent years, 2007 and 2009.

 

WESTERN DIVISION COMPETITIONS

 

The Western Divisional Competitions are well under way for the season.  The Two Wood Pairs title has been claimed by Mike Richards & Keith Williams (Penlee) who defeated Gerald Fisher & Linda Martin (Illogan) in the final.  Dave Studden (Illogan) has claimed a fourth consecutive Two Wood Singles title after defeating Don Falck (Marazion) in the final.

 

COUNTY LEAGUES

 

Two places in the end of season Bebbington Cup competition have been confirmed with Dobwalls claiming the East area title and Wadebridge A claiming the North.  The West and Central areas are however far from being decided.

 

In the Western Division 4 clubs remain in contention after only Helston picked up maximum points in last week’s fixtures to move onto 81 points equal with Newlyn Trinity Jowsters who suffered a 5-1 home defeat to Penlee.  Holmans remain out from on 83 points after a 2 -4 away defeat at fourth placed Penzance Comets who have moved onto 75.

 

Withiel Oaks held on to spot in the Central area with 58 points after a 2-4 defeat at home to third placed Ladock Chiefs who now have 51.  Lostwithiel hold second place with 53 points after a 6-0 home win against St Newlyn East.

 

The Bebbington Cup, which brings together the four area league winners is scheduled to be played at the Dragon Centre, Bodmin on Sunday 3 April from 0900.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Cornwall’s Premier team will be seeking to follow there A Team colleagues into the Semi Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition when they take on Hampshire at the Bristol Indoor Bowls Centre on Saturday 26 February.  Cornwall go into the match off the back of three wins, the most recent against Avon three weeks ago.  Progression to the Semi Finals would see Cornwall face either Norfolk or Shropshire a week on Saturday (5 March) when the A team will also be playing Oxfordshire in there Semi Final.

 

BRITISH ISLES A TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Peter Hore from the Holmans club will be representing England in the British Isles A Team Championship on the weekend of 19 and 20 March in Swansea.  Peter, a regular member of the Cornwall County team has been selected to play Singles in the individual event, a role he also fulfils in the Cornwall County Team.  This will be Peter’s second appearance in the championships having taken a place in the team championship in 2009.

 

COUNTY LEAGUES

 

As the end of the season approaches the race for the four places in the end of season Bebbington Cup competition is far from over.

 

In the Western Division 4 clubs are still in contention.  Holmans lead the way with 81 points ahead of Newlyn Trinity Jowsters on 80, the two teams meet on the 3rd of March in what could turn out to be a crucial match in determining the area title.  Helston Grylls are still in contention with 75 points and Penzance Comets who host Holmans this week have 71.

 

Withiel Oaks hold top spot in the Central area with 56 points, 9 ahead of a group of three clubs tied for second place St Newlyn East with two games remaining, Ladock Chiefs with three and Lostwithiel with four.  Withiel Oaks face both Ladock Chiefs and St Newlyn East at home in their remaining fixtures.  Lostwithiel were due to host St Newlyn East on Sunday (20 February).

 

Wadebridge A have secured the Northern area with a match to spare with Altarnun likely to claim second spot.  Dobwalls lead the way in the East Area holding a 14 point lead over Liskeard with three games left to play at the time of writing.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Cornwall’s A Team travelled to Northampton on Saturday to face Essex in the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation competition.

 

Cornwall started the match well picking up 7 out of 8 points in the first session.  Graham Reeves (13-12) & Tony Baldwin (17-9) won both Singles with Max Burden & Brenda Sleep (14-11) and Tony Jago & Luke Jolly (10-10) in the Pairs ensuring Cornwall were unbeaten in the session.  Session Two saw Cornwall extend their lead in the match recording a further three wins.  In the Triples Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerry Fisher (13-7) and Sheila Hodge, Chris Cawrse & Jim Rule (17-5) together with the Four of Meg Horrell, Margaret Goodwin, Joe Dixon & Derek Newton (10-6) putting Cornwall into a strong position at the halfway point leading 13 points to 3.

 

Essex claimed their only session advantage in the afternoon Singles and Pairs as Cornwall recorded 3 points in the Singles, Graham Reeves winning 13-8 and Tony Baldwin drawing 11-11.  Cornwall claimed the bonus points in the Singles with Essex taking the Pairs. With a session to play the score read Cornwall 18 points Essex 10 points leaving Cornwall needing three points from the final session to secure progression to the Semi Finals at the end of the month.  The game points were shared in the session with Cornwall and Essex claiming a win apiece in both the Triples and Fours.  Cornwall’s points secured by Bob Williams, Linda Martin & Gerry Fisher (12-9) in the Triples and Kath Goodman, Ashley Davies, Joyce Ward & Derek Swaby (12-3) in the Fours.  Cornwall also secured the bonus points in both the Triples and Fours to record a final score of Cornwall 26 points 179 shots Essex 14 points 166 shots.

 

Cornwall’s opponents in the Semi Finals due to be played on Saturday March 5th will be either Oxfordshire or Suffolk.  The venue for the Premier Team’s Quarter Final fixture against Hampshire has been confirmed as Bristol Indoor Bowls Club.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Cornwall's Premier Team claimed a place in the Quarter Finals of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition with a 25 points to 15 win over Avon at Christie Miller Sports Centre in Melksham, Wiltshire on Saturday.

Cornwall started strongly with three wins out of four in the first session. In the Singles Peter Hore (13-9) and the pairs of Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (6-14) and Karen Watson & David Studden (8-18) securing the points for Cornwall. The second session saw the points shared with the Triples secured by Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams (23-3) and Joe Coups, Ken Horrell & Brian Wakeley (11-5) for Cornwall and Avon claiming both Fours games. At the halfway point Cornwall led by 10 points and 99 shots to 6 points and 70 shots.

The third session again saw the points shared between the two teams. Cornwall earning wins in the Singles for Nigel Nicholls (17-11) and Pairs for Karen Watson & David Studden (20-9). The bonus points awarded for most shots in each discipline were shared with Avon claiming the Singles and Cornwall the Pairs the leave the match score at Cornwall 16 points Avon 12 going into the last session leaving Cornwall seeking a minimum of 5 points to guarantee the win and a place in the next round.

Cornwall collected three wins in the session to make sure of the match win thanks to the Triple of Elise Daniell, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams (13-5) and the Fours of Carolyn Stanley, Carol Ford, Pam Williams & Graham Ford (12-3) and Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Henry Kendall & Mike Widger (7-4). Cornwall claimed three of the four bonus points with two from the Triples and one from the Fours where Cornwall did well to neutralise the deficit from the morning session.

The final match score read Cornwall 25 points 192 shots Avon 15 points 148 shots. Cornwall's Premier team will next play on Saturday 26 February at Kempston IBC, Bedford in the Quarter Finals when Hampshire will be their opponents. The A team play their Quarter Final on Saturday against Essex at Caroline Chisholm School, Northampton.

INTER AREA LEAGUE

 

On Sunday the final round of Inter Area League matches were played at the Dragon Leisure Centre with West playing Central and East playing North.

 

In the West v Central match it was he West who claimed a 6-2 points advantage in the first session with wins in the Singles for Nigel Nicholls (14-12) & Peter Hore (27-7) and Fours for Ann Warren, Peter Warren, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams (13-6), Central’s points recorded by Mark Albon, Betty Temple-Smith, Gillian Cawrse & Brian Wakeley (8-7) in the other Fours.  The second session saw the points shared with West’s recorded by Elise Daniell & David Studden (14-11) in the Pairs and Don Falck, Derek Murrish & Keith Williams (10-8) in the Triples.  Central’s points coming from Carol & Graham Ford (14-8) in the Pairs and Henry Kendall, Carolyn Stanley & Jim Stanley (10-6) in the Triples.  At the halfway point in the match West lead by 10 points to 6 and 99 shots to 76.

 

Session three saw West extend their lead in the match with wins in the Singles for Nigel Nicholls (20-4) and Peter Hore (15-12) and Fours for Ann & Peter Warren, Nicholas Truscott & Kevin Williams (12-8), Central’s points coming from Marilyn Stewart, Jim Rule, David Giles & Arthur Hambley (9-6) in the second Fours game.  West claimed the shots bonus points for both the Singles and Fours to hold a 20 points to 8 lead going into the last session which also ensured that the Inter Area League title was secured.  The final session was again shared on the mats with West scoring points thanks to Elise Daniell & David Studden (15-7) in the Pairs and Don Falck, Derek Murrish & Keith Williams (14-5) in the Triples.  Central’s points coming from Norman & Joyce Ward (13-8) in the Pairs and Meg Horrell, John Worton & Ken Horrell (22-8) in the Triples.  The bonus points for the Pairs were shared with Central taking the Triples to leave the final score reading West 25 points 197 shots Central 15 points 156 shots.

 

North took an early lead in their match against East with wins in both Fours for Robert Flower, Trish Hodge, Emma Provis & Andrew Bunce (13-6) and  Margaret Menhenick, Barbara Swaby, David Stokes & Derek Swaby (10-9).  In the Singles John Menhenick (North) and Tony Baldwin (East) played out a 12-12 draw and Graham Reeves scored recorded East’s only win of the session (16-6) in the second Singles game.  East claimed three wins in the second session, Miriam Barbery & Brenda Sleep (14-9) in the Pairs and in the Triples Rachel Gribble, Dennis Shorthouse and Neil Gribble (11-6) and Susan Ashton, Melba Kitt & Jim Ashton (12-10).  North’s points from the session scored by Margaret & Ronald Shillaber (12-8) in the Pairs.  At the halfway point East lead 9 points to 7 and 88 shots to 78.

 

The third session saw North claim all four games, Stuart Hambly (13-12) and John Menhenick (13-9) in the Singles and Robert Flower, Trish Hodge, Emma Provis & Andrew Bunce (13-4) and  Margaret Menhenick, Barbara Swaby, David Stokes & Derek Swaby (15-6) in the Fours.  The bonus points were split with East claiming the Singles and North taking the Fours.  Going into the final North lead by 17 points to 11 and a rare Inter Area win seemed to be within their grasp.  East were not finished though and claimed three wins out of four in the final session.  Miriam Barbery & Brenda Sleep (13-9) and Gary Davey & Martin Boraston (16-8) in the Pairs and Rachel Gribble, Dennis Shorthouse and Neil Gribble (11-9) in the Triples.  The second Triples game went the way of the North with a win for  Joyce & Ron Smith & Geoff Croud (14-11).  With the score reading North 19 East 17 the final bonus points would be crucial in determining the outcome of the match.  The East claimed both the Pairs and Triples bonus points to win the match 21 points to 19 and 170 shots to 172.

On Saturday (5 February) Cornwall’s Premier Team travel to Wiltshire to face Avon in the Preliminary round of the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition.  The A Team will play on the weekend on 19 & 20 February and await the outcome of a match this weekend to determine their opponents.
