CORNWALL SHORT MAT BOWLS ASSOCIATION

NEWS RELEASE 15th November 2009

County Two Wood Singles

On Saturday (14 November) 51 bowlers competed in the qualification competition for the County Two Wood Singles at the Dragon Leisure Centre, Bodmin. Play was split into two sessions with 4 bowlers from each qualifying for the finals day in March.

Qualifying for the playoff round in the Morning Session were group winners John Keers (St Agnes) 6 points +12, Peter Hore (Holmans) 6 +20, Alan Rathbone (St Minver) 4 +8, Phil Hicks (Luxulyan) 6 +32, Jim Stanley (St Newlyn East) 6 +24 and Nigel Nicholls 6 +21. Also progressing as highest runners up were Peter Spargo (Liskeard) 4 +15 and Bill Sharp (Dobwalls) 4 +16. In the playoff round Peter Spargo claimed a 16-8 win over Phil Hicks. Peter Hore needed an extra end to beat Alan Rathbone 13-12. Nigel Nicholls defeated Bill Sharp 13-8 and Jim Stanley claimed the final place with a 10-9 win over John Keers.

The afternoon session saw group wins for Graham Reeves (Saltash) 4 +12, Rob Stack (Treviscoe) 5 +9, Paul Spencer (Wadebridge) 6 +17, Carol Ford (St Newlyn East) 6 +13, Nicholas Truscott (Holmans) 6 +16 and Max Burden (Blisland) 6 +9. Qualifying as best runners up were Ted Pentland (Luxulyan) and David Hudson (Boscastle) 4 +3. In the playoff round Carol Ford was a 12-5 winner over Rob Stack. The other three games were all decided by a single shot with the same 11-10 score line. David Hudson beating Ted Pentland, Graham Reeves overcoming Nicholas Truscott and Max Burden requiring an extra end to beat Paul Spencer. David Hudson and Max Burden becoming the first county points scorers for their respective clubs Boscastle and Blisland.

ESMBA Inter County Championship

On Sunday (15 November) Cornwall’s County Squad travelled to Lytchett Minster to face Dorset in the latest round of Inter County Championship matches.

The Premier Team started strongly in the first session, the morning Singles and Pairs, claiming all four games with wins in the Singles for Peter Hore (13-8) and Nigel Nicholls (16-7) and Pairs for Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (16-7) and Kevin Williams & Mike Widger (13-9). Dorset hit back in the second session, the morning Triples and Fours, winning on three of the four mats. Cornwall’s win coming in the Triples for Margaret Jenkin, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (13-8). At the halfway point Cornwall lead by 10 points and 94 shots to Dorset’s 6 points and 71 shots.

The afternoon Singles and Pairs finished all square at 4 points and 52 shots each. Cornwall’s wins recorded by Peter Hore (16-10) in the singles and Gillian Cawrse & Percy Tripp (12-10) in the Pairs. Cornwall also claimed the bonus points for both disciplines that’s to superior aggregate shot scores. The final session, the afternoon Triples and Fours also saw the points shared thanks to wins in for both Triples, Margaret Jenkin, Carol Ford & Graham Ford (11-5) and Elise Daniell, Gerald Fisher & Nicholas Truscott (15-7) which also secured the Triples bonus points. Cornwall’s Fours were unlucky not to record a point during the match losing three of the four games by a single shot.

The final match score being Dorset 16 points 153 shots Cornwall 24 points 185 shots.

The A Team had the worst possible start to their match losing all four games in the morning Singles and Pairs. The second session, the morning Triples and Fours saw points shared with Cornwall claiming wins in the Triples for Anthony Jago, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton (17-1) and Fours for Meg Horrell, Camilla Cawrse, Betty Temple-Smith & Peter Hamley (8-7). At the halfway point in the match Dorset held a 12 points 111 shots to 4 points 75 shots lead.

The afternoon Singles and Pairs saw Cornwall go unbeaten in the four games with wins for Peter Spargo (12-9) in the Singles and Pam Hamley & Derek Swaby (15-10) in the Pairs. Draws for Graham Reeves (10-10) in the singles and Jim & Carolyn Stanley (12-12) in the pairs saw Cornwall close the gap in the overall match score. The final session, the afternoon Triples and Fours saw Cornwall take another session advantage thanks to wins for Tony Jago, Brenda Sleep & Derek Newton (9-6) in the Triples and Meg Horrell, Camilla Cawrse, Betty Temple-Smith & Peter Hamley (3-11) in the Fours. The second Cornwall Four of Marion Keers, Joyce Ward, John Keers and Marion Keers recorded a draw (10-10). Cornwall also collected the bonus points for the Triples and Fours, although the fours depended on the score of 4 recorded by Peter Hamley’s rink in the last end of their game.

Cornwall narrowly missed out on the match win with the final score reading Dorset 21 points 182 shots Cornwall 19 points 163 shots.

INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

 

Cornwall’s Short Mat Bowls team enjoyed mixed fortunes in the latest round of ESMBA Inter County Championship matches on Saturday (31 October) against Devon at the Isca Bowls Centre in Exeter.

 

The Premier Team, up against a Devon team containing five current and one former member of the England Squad, got off to the worst possible start losing all for games in the morning Singles and Pairs as Devon opened up an 8 point and 58 shot lead.  The second session proved to be Cornwall’s most successful of the match with 3 points scored by the Fours, a win for Roy Christophers, Graham Luke, Brian Wakeley and Chris Roberts (9-5) and a draw for Kath Goodman, Peter Sully, Phil Hicks and John Thomas (11-11).  Both Triples however suffered defeats.  At the halfway point Devon held a convincing 13 points 125 shots to 3 points 57 shots advantage.

 

The third session, the second for the Singles and Pairs saw Peter Hore record Cornwall’s only other points of the game with a well fought 14-12 win.  The final session, for Triples and Fours saw Devon take another clean sweep of wins to leave the final at Devon 35 points 244 shots Cornwall 5 points 123 shots.

 

In the weekend’s other game in the group Dorset claimed a 22-18 win over Somerset to move into second place and leave Cornwall tied with Somerset at the bottom of the table.

The A Team started with a shared first session of Singles and Pairs thanks to wins for Peter Spargo (18-7) and Sheila Hodge & Bill Sharp (14-13).  Devon opened up an advantage in the second session claiming three out of four games in the Triples and Fours, Cornwall’s points coming from the Triple of Tony Jago, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton (9-6).  At the half way point Devon held a 10 points 92 shots to 6 points 76 shots lead.

 

The third session, the second outing for the Singles and Pairs saw Devon again take three wins out of Four, Peter Spargo recording Cornwall’s 2 points for the session (17-8).  With a session to play Devon looked to be in control leading 18 points 149 shots to Cornwall’s 10 points 118 shots.  Cornwall were not finished though and in the final session of Triples and Fours recorded four wins, each by a single shot.   In the triples Tony Jago, Miriam Barbery & Derek Newton (8-7) and Jim Stanley, Marilyn Stewart & Arthur Hambley (14-13).  In the fours Marion Keers, Joyce Ward, John Keers & Norman Ward (9-8) and Meg Horrell, Camilla Cawrse, Betty Temple-Smith & Carolyn Stanley (7-6).  Cornwall claimed the bonus points for most shots in the Singles and Triples, by a single shot in each case.   The final score read Devon 20 points 183 shots Cornwall 20 points 156 shots.

  

Dorset claimed a 21-19 win over Somerset at Wincanton to leave just 15 points splitting the four counties with three rounds of games to go.
