CORNWALL COUNTY SHORT MAT BOWLING ASSOCIATION
NEWS RELEASE – 1st March 2009
ESMBA INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
Cornwall’s Short Mat Bowls County Squad was in action on Saturday in the ESMBA Inter County Championship Consolation Competition at Caroline Chisholm School, Northampton.
The A Team were involved in a tough match against Northamptonshire. Cornwall collected just one win in the first session, recorded by Graham Reeves (15-12) in the Singles, from the four games. The second session saw Cornwall hit back claiming a 5-3 session advantage thanks to wins in the Triples for Robert Flower, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (14-8), Fours for Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks (9-3) and a draw in the Triples for Pam Hamley, Jean Roper & Peter Hamley (8-8). Halfway through the score line read Northamptonshire 9 points 87 shots Cornwall 7 points 83 shots.
The third session went the way of Northamptonshire with Cornwall claiming 3 of the 8 points on offer with a win for Joyce Ward & Miriam Barbery (15-11) and draw for Carolyn Matthews & Pam Williams (14-14) in the Pairs. Cornwall fought back strongly in the final session claiming three wins, Robert Flower, Derek Swaby & Norman Ward (8-6) and Pam Hamley, Jean Roper & Peter Hamley (11-8) in the triples and Camilla Cawrse, Meg Horrell, Ken Horrell & Phil Hicks (12-4) in the fours. After addition of the bonus points for most shots on each discipline, shared 4-4 with Northamptonshire claiming the Singles and Pairs and Cornwall the Triples and Fours the final score read Northamptonshire 20 points 171 shots Cornwall 20 points 170 shots.
With the result unable to be settled on games won alone, both counties having won 7 and drawn 2 games a deciding one end bowl off was required. Phil Hicks took on the challenge of facing Brian Nelson, who had faced the same situation in the quarter finals for Northamptonshire. Bowling first Hicks came up short of the jack, Nelson’s first wood also fell short. Hicks adjusted well with his second wood to trail the jack to within a foot of the ditch line. Nelson was unable to respond with his second wood leaving Hicks a clear shot to draw behind the jack and set up a secure position leaving Nelson again unable to respond. Hicks left his final wood just short of the head and despite a well directed running wood Nelson he was unable to make a significant impression on the head and the match win was secured for Cornwall.
Cornwall will face Hampshire in the final of the competition on Sunday (7th March).
